The math teacher in me wanted to explore the probabilities a bit after my first time rolling dice with Ironsworn last night. I'm a notoriously bad roller, so I figured it was probably just my luck again, but it felt like my awesome beginning nearly ground to a complete halt after getting a couple of key misses. Two things I realized out of this. 1) I like to win, a lot. 2) My metal dice (trying to be cool and play Ironsworn with metal!) are not weighted correctly so that my d6 rolls a 2 about 90% of the time. Time to switch dice! Anyway, I did go ahead and figure out the probabilities which will be labeled as a percent followed by a number in parentheses. The parenthetical number is the amount you would be adding to your d6 roll between stats and any adds. Here they are: Chance of Strong Hit: 15% (1), 23% (2), 33% (3), 45% (4), 56% (5) Chance of Weak Hit: 40% (1), 44% (2), 44% (3), 40% (4), 35% (5) Chance of Miss: 45% (1), 33% (2), 23% (3), 15% (4), 9% (5) Like I said, I lik...

Shawn Tomkin Hi, I'm looking for source files of the icons you used in the Asset cards.

Shawn Tomkin Hi, I'm looking for source files of the icons you used in the Asset cards. I see you cited https://game-icons.net/ as a source, but it would seem you've done quite a bit of your own edits to them and many are original. Would you be willing to distribute those as .svg's or whatever form they're in, separately from the completed Asset cards? Thank you! https://game-icons.net/

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone! The first three posts of my Ironsworn Solo AP are up on a blog I just made. The first two set up the character and setting, so if you want to jump into the action feel free to skip ahead to third post, which is Chapter 1 of the story. This is a pretty narrative-heavy account, with only small amounts of gamey narration in italics. However, this is indeed an actual play, as what you see here is almost identical in format to how I play my other solo game which I haven't posted anywhere (it's now standing at about a 50 page google doc). I think the written details are not any greater than what would normally be discussed verbally in a traditional group setting, and writing out those details is, in my opinion, a critical component of getting invested in a solo game. My plan is to do a lot of writing this weekend since I'll have some free time. After that, I will probably try to write at least one update a week. Let me know if you have any suggestions or comments! ht...

I've been playing Ironsworn solo for about 10 hours, thanks Shawn Tomkin The book is beautiful and really well done. I like the focus on fiction rather than mechanics, but I'm having a hard time with NPC companions having zero mechanical effect (particularly when healing, resupplying, making camp as a low wits solo character-- feels like a fail fest). I also don't want to narrate a success just because I have an NPC companion who might be competent at one of these tasks. I've thought about giving my NPC companion(s) two defining stats based on their fiction (edge & wits, for example) and simply doing a +1 when rolling if one or more NPCs with the relevant stat assist. What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions?

Holy cow!

Holy cow! So thankful that this game came up in Reddit! I have been "playing" solo the last couple of nights, and all I've accomplished has been to get through writing out and modifying the Truths worksheet and writing out my backstory, but it's been a blast! I'm trying to write like an actual story so that each vow and asset are represented, and I'm happy with how it's turning out thus far. Looking forward to actually rolling some dice soon and test-driving the mechanics! Hopefully I'll have an actual play and a review up soon as well. You can read about it on my blog here: http://www.playeveryrole.com/?p=472

Reach a Milestone variant

Reach a Milestone variant Hi all, I play my first game, and I really enjoy the solo engine of Ironsworn. I like the challenge dice generating the difficulty of the task, the progress track system works very well and the vows gives to my character a motivation avoiding the "And now what to do?" feeling of some solo games. The only move what I feel too subjective is the Reach a Milestone move. As this move is one of the most important move in the game, I made an update of it for my game sessions, and I can say that it works well. It is not tested as much as I wanted, because I do not have a lot of time to play, so please if you try it in your game session, please send me a feedback. Thank you. The move refers to time waste ticks. The idea is, that in the game there is no time limit to fulfill a quest. You can have a quest to rescue the lady of the town from the cave of the dragon, but no time limit to do it before the dragon eats the lady. This update give you the chance of the...

Hello!

Hello! I have kind of a weird question, as I've never played a solo RPG before. I have a fair amount of sporadic downtime at my current job, and I'm looking for something creative and fun to fill the time gaps. Is Ironsworn something that could feasibly be "played" in small batches of 5-20 minutes at random times throughout a work day? We're kind of obligated to look semi-busy even if we aren't, so being offscreen is a huge draw for me. Thanks!

Hey all, planning on starting a solo AP soon (maybe when the final version of the core rules comes out).

Hey all, planning on starting a solo AP soon (maybe when the final version of the core rules comes out). Out of curiosity, does anyone have an opinion which type of character they would prefer to read about in the AP, which will take the form of alternating narrative and gamey sections. 1) A mystical assassin/rogue-y type character that uses shadow as the primary stat. Almost certainly will feature shadow walk and probably cutthroat. This would not be a "good" character, but evil is relative. 2) a staff-wielding monk archetype, likely focusing on momentum-gaining synergies to access momentum burn as often as possible. Will focus on Edge 3) a heart-focused charming rogue a la Zorro 4) a holy warrior on a quest to purge heresy (campaign would involve heavy religious strife with the theme being that unity under one faith will end the trials and tribulations of the ironlanders)

Hi!

Hi! New to Ironsworn (been doing solo play for half a week now) and was wondering if there were any more actual play podcasts/videos (former preferred) ? An interesting concept, on paper at least, would be seeing a slightly larger cast of players and characters playing out events in solo (probably dramatic retelling of what they played through?) or co-op play in the same setting as one another.

Shawn, this looks like an awesome game.

Shawn, this looks like an awesome game. I can’t wait to play. Would it make sense to add an Oracle for Encounters varying by Region?

Two questions from me.

Two questions from me. One, what exactly is "blood iron" as referenced in the Bladebound asset? And, if it's some sort of enchanted weapon/item thing, anyone have ideas for a similar asset for "blood iron" axes/spears/other weapons? Two, how have y'all been handling loot in your games thus far (if you have)? The lack of inventory management is refreshing on the whole but I think I'd still like to try to hack a way in to still get cool/special items somehow, since that's the source of a lot of really great moments in D&D (hence the prior question). If anyone has a non-hacky way they used the current mechanics to represent that narratively, let me know that too!

Because every Monday needs a bit of inspiration, I thought I'd share some art from my Ironsworn inspiration folder as a regular feature. First up, here's a beautiful piece from Simon Fetscher, which is part of the Fall of Gods art book. I imagine this as a village along the southern coast in the Flooded Lands. Looking at this now, something about the figures in the boat really remind me of Branwhyn and Corinna from Jeremiah Wenneker's play reports. Here's a preview of the final Ironsworn moves handout. There's been a couple of moderate changes, including: - Test Your Spirit is now Endure Stress, as part of an overall effort to treat Harm and Stress more consistently in the rules. - Suffering harm or stress is now rephrased as a reference to the endure moves, with the amount of harm or stress listed when appropriate, such as "Endure Harm (1 harm)". - Face Danger now has explicit options on a weak hit. - The Pay the Price table has seen a few more changes. Apart from that, just a whole bunch of minor edits to clean up various text issues. These updates will get folded into the final release of the core book, out in July. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ZDPEOSXd78rgTvwjE50fynD9XtJp6LZS
Lots of new members in the Ironsworn community today. Welcome! Please feel free to holler with any questions.

Quick rules question: Say the PC has built up 10 progress in a fight, but on their last attack they scored a weak hit and thus lose the initiative necessary to use End the Fight. Can they use Turn the Tide to immediately roll for End the Fight? If so, does the +1 apply?

Hery guys! I just found this Fate Core setting in spanish, Antiguo y Colosal (Ancient and Colossal).

Hery guys! I just found this Fate Core setting in spanish, Antiguo y Colosal (Ancient and Colossal). For those spanish speakers, I'd advice grabbing it, both as a Fate Game and as setting material, because it REALLY goes well with Ironsworn! It's about low, isolated villages who live in the remains of an ancient, post-apocalyptic world in which a powerful civilization flourished, only to be destroyed by inmense and mysterious beings known as colosi. The young people of the tribes bond with mystical animals known as Beasts, and together they explore the broken world, face monsters known as Wraiths, and face the immense Colosi. The setting is kinda low-magic, as characters start off as nobodies in tribes who don't even have soldiers/hunters, and even tho magic is present, it's mysterious (no spellcasting, but there are rituals). So if you're lacking ideas, try this out :D

Whew, long time no see everyone! My workload is finally backing off a bit and I wanted to see if anyone was interested in doing some play by post Ironsworn over Rolegate. I can take on a few players, so let me know!

I've been updating my asset card templates for availability in POD format.

Image
I've been updating my asset card templates for availability in POD format. One concern, however, is the use of fillable dots for marking abilities. I suspect folks won't want to write all over the POD cards, but I don't really have a better idea on how to handle the abilities. If you sleeve the cards in protectors, I would imagine dry erase markers work fine. Also, things like a grease pencil might work on the glossy surface. Or, you can use little removable stickers like this: https://amzn.to/2JWsrOc . Or, the trusty old paperclip technique would be a little kludgy but would work. Is this a problem I need to solve for folks? Or a non-issue? Thoughts? I could include a card in the set which has some recommendations on how to handle marking abilities without writing on the cards.

Tonight was my first play with a group.

Tonight was my first play with a group. We had six players. For our first game we randomized the assets and drew 3 random. Then we traded and discussed a bit. A few of us discarded an asset for another draw. We were having fun with the options but wanted to make some that was our own. It was great, because I originally wanted to play a Wizardy type and ended up with my nomad tribesman Wayfinder named Quiet and his Hawk Suno (and Totem!). The rest of the group included: One player who always plays barbarian types ended up with a sort of Mystical investigator with the Sight, Divination, & I'm forgetting what else a Raven. A Storyteller who was afflicted with a disease that made him a sword-fighting savant (Swordmaster & Duelist). A stoner/surfer Slayer monk who fights with a Staff and has a Hound companion. A young girl with an ominous birthmark with a penchant for stealth and deception (and litigiousness). And finally a Ranger Herbalist who just wanted to stay out of...

In eager anticipation of a Sci-Fi version of Ironsworn, my wife and I sat down and did a cooperative play set in the Firefly universe. There have of course been some hacks of the system and some changes. Notably the inclusion of a ship asset independent of either character and which sadly didn't see much use. Most of the rest are reskinned assets. Most of it is still pretty rough, but we had a hilariously good time writing it. I hope it is an enjoyable read. As always, thank you to those who read these stories. I hope they are enjoyable and inspire. Comments, critiques, and charges of heresy are always welcome. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1USc3fYMVq4B924DuBkPmVJYDX4kGxG_h

I notice there are a few assets that require debilities, have a special item, or previous vow coming to fruition.

I notice there are a few assets that require debilities, have a special item, or previous vow coming to fruition. The book doesn't mention these, but I assume it's fair to say that you can't start with them. Or maybe you can?

I also have started an actual play of Ironsworn on the rpg.net forums.

So when I swear a vow that requires me to travel to a destination do I have two progress tracks? One for the journey the other for The Vow? I was marking progress on my journey and rolled for reaching my destination. Would I use the same progress track to roll for fulfilling my Vow?
