Just realized I hadn’t posted my ongoing game over on RoleGate! Things are getting pretty exciting as the gang faces down a Broken invasion led by a mysterious and deadly Shaman. Check it out and feel free to leave your thoughts in Public Chat, I’m sure everyone would love to see what you think! https://www.rolegate.com/ref/A554551N/ironsworn https://www.rolegate.com/ref/A554551N/ironsworn

It's, #inspirationmonday again, so let's Ask the Oracle for some inspiration and see what we get. Something different this week. Instead of a piece of illustration, here's a screen cap from the movie The Revenant. I'm a big fan of this movie, and the amazing landscapes and driven protagonist were very much on my mind while working on Ironsworn. Also, as far as I understand it Josh McGraw is basically this guy right now in his Ironsworn game.

Page 96 of the Rulebook says “The shaken debility (page 37) is temporary and can be dealt with through the Heal or Sojourn moves” but there is nothing about removing shaken debility in the description of Heal move (page 63) nor on page 37. So I guess that Heal cannot help with being shaken?

I made a Google Sheets-based character sheet.

I made a Google Sheets-based character sheet. Feel free to Copy and use it, and Duplicate the character sheet for multiple players. It's a bit of a work in progress still, so any suggestions are welcome. Feel free to leave a comment on the sheet itself!

I finished my first solo session of Ironsworn yesterday.

I finished my first solo session of Ironsworn yesterday. Overall I thought it was fantastic! However, I had some questions regarding combat, specifically about Initiative and how "non-combat" moves figure into it. Now onto my question. The only moves that directly mention Initiate within the move's text itself are the combat moves, most notably "Strike" and "Clash." So, I found myself a little at a loss about how to handle initiative loss or gain when preforming moves like "Face Danger" or "Secure an Advantage." If I have initiative and preform a "Secure an Advantage" or "Face Danger" move but roll only a Weak Hit, do I automatically lose initiative no matter the other results of the roll? Or can I hold onto Initiative if it makes sense in the narrative. A weak hit on "Secure an Advantage" says that the advantage created is fleeting... but you still have the advantage for at least a few moments, so woul...

Quick question and probably a dumb one, but there's a language barier for me so please pardon: when should I actually endure harm? On every miss in Clash/Face Danger? I thought so, but I can't find it anywhere and the example play seems to suggest using endure harm when it makes sense in a fiction (as oppose to adjusting the fiction to the mechanical result)

Hi everyone.

Hi everyone. I've been really loving Ironsworn. I made some small tweaks and have been solo playing a medieval knight roaming around a vaguely Arthurian setting. Its really scratching my itch for what I want out of roleplaying games. I tried it out today playing co-op with my girlfriend and have a question about the Aid Your Ally move, specifically when you get a miss. I found myself often using the move to set up for my gf's roll and to keep myself in the fiction even when I wasn't doing the main roll. This meant that I often felt like there weren't real stakes to my rolls, and the Pay The Price felt a bit forced for them. For instance, what would you suggest the consequences be for failing to Aid Your Ally as they Swear An Iron Vow? It feels like the real consequences, that we actually care about, are tied to the vow move. Would it be a good idea to take the failure you'd use for the 'real move'? Sorry if this isn't very well explained. It was just som...

I'm printing out a fresh set of asset cards and other sheets for my next convention game of Ironsworn in October. When I go to print preview for the character sheet it appears to be filled in? Will it print out blank? I ought to find out rather than posting... :-) Great to be readying another game set in the Ironlands.

If you speak French, or are willing to put up with the terrible YouTube auto-translation, Julien Pouard really does a great job in these Ironsworn actual play videos. He's got a pretty cool setup, and (as far as I can tell from the spotty translation) he does a great job explaining the game and using the fiction and mechanics to drive the story. This is part 1 of the video. There's also a previous video as a session 0 with character and world creation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r10KmcXBmbk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r10KmcXBmbk

What in-game effect does a Wright's Specialty have on the abilities the Asset provides?

What in-game effect does a Wright's Specialty have on the abilities the Asset provides? It seems like none, but it shouldn't it? Compare to the Devotant Asset, for example. Also, for typical two-sided printing, it would be easier to intersperse pages with card fronts and pages with card backs.

For the Wildblood path, how should I understand the terms woodcraft, woodland creatures, and forest?

For the Wildblood path, how should I understand the terms woodcraft, woodland creatures, and forest? On a more restrictive read, it sounds like it might apply to any adventures in the Deep Wilds, and occasionally something else. Basically, it'd only apply when surrounded by trees, and then only while doing the actions specified (tracking, hiding, etc.) On a more expansive interpretation you could read it as applying to anything in the wilds / outside of civilization. So while gathering information using woodcraft, you'd take +1 so long as you aren't in a settlement, a farm, etc. If you can face danger by hiding in the wilds, you'd also get a bonus. This seems more in line with the restrictions that other paths have, but I'm not positive this was what you envisioned. What was your intention for the path?

What a fantastic game.

What a fantastic game. I had a blast not only with my friends but in solo play too. However, we are accustomed to more... crunchy games. Are there any additional assets to be downloaded somewhere? The website calls Assets Cards a Volume 1, so is there a Volume 2? :) Or maybe a template for designing our own? Thanks again! PS. Sorry if this question pops up a lot, I'm pretty new around here

Just printed out the entire asset volume 1 and noticed that the card backs do not line up properly with the card...

Just printed out the entire asset volume 1 and noticed that the card backs do not line up properly with the card fronts, for 4 cards in total. Basically, if one row does not contain the same type of card, the backs need to be in reverse order since they are printed on the back of the paper being used. What would be awesome would be this - correct the PDF for all new downloaders. Then provide a "fix" PDF which only includes the 4 erroneous cards, this time with correct backs, so that those of us who have already printed the entire asset pack don't need to reprint 18 cards to only fix 8 of them. The cards in question are Companion Raven (which has the Path back), Path Banner-Sworn (which has the Companion back), Combat Talent Swordmaster (which has the Ritual back), and Ritual Bind (which has the Combat Talent back). Thanks!

It's a bit fiddly, but you can TOTALLY use OneNote to keep track of your Ironsworn plays digitally!

It's a bit fiddly, but you can TOTALLY use OneNote to keep track of your Ironsworn plays digitally! I had been working on a fillable version of the character sheet, but got fed up with Acrobat's ancient limitations with regards to checkboxes and such. Pitiful that you can design a perfect fillable sheet in InDesign, then have it beaten back to the Stone Age by Acrobat! So I came up with this today in OneNote:

Been here for ages, about to ask some simple questions.

Been here for ages, about to ask some simple questions. 1) Could 'Banner-Sworn', 'Battle-Scarred', and 'Ritualist' be take at chargen, or are they only available through the special conditions occurring in play? 2) can you take rituals even if you're not a Ritualist?
Anyone done a hack towards sci-fi game yet?

How would you recommend handling higher level vows?

How would you recommend handling higher level vows? I've been looking at the amount of progress it takes to fulfill vows, and it scales up very quickly for higher level vows. Vow level 1. Moves to fill progress track: 3-4. Moves/xp: 3-4. Vow level 2. Moves to fill progress track: 5. Moves/xp: 2.5. Vow level 3. Moves to fill progress track: 10. Moves/xp: 3.33. Vow level 4. Moves to fill progress track: 20. Moves/xp: 5. Vow level 5. Moves to fill progress track: 40. Moves/xp: 8. The first three are in the same ballpark. Jumping up to a level 4 vow means significantly more checkpoints for each xp. An epic vow means ever more (more than double the number of checkpoints required per xp than one of the easier vows). It looks like the "optimal" way of playing for PCs would be to try to take a lot of smaller vows, and largely not care about higher level ones. I'd like to encourage more long range and extremely difficult vows. It fits better with the theme and narrative, and i...

Inspired by my play group's love of Warhammer Fantasy RP3, I've put together a deck of poker sized enemy reference cards. They include each enemy's rank, features, drives, and tactics, plus some flavour text when I could fit it in. I tried to ensure they wouldn't look out of place on an Ironsworn table, but they're not an exact match. This was partially a design choice to differentiate "GM" cards from player assets, but honestly I also didn't have access to the correct fonts. There were one or two cards I couldn't hack together proper art for by slightly modifying game-icons.net assets. I've given them placeholder art until I get around to making something original. I tried to keep things thematic but they are still a bit of a drop in quality. You can download the individual cards, as well as a Tabletop Simulator deck sheet here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gok0flachlh62il/AABj2qtjOYQAhXDYZs_2xnoka?dl=0 Released under the Creative Commons BY-NC...

And yet more rule questions...Would the hound's Ferocious ability work with ranged attacks?

And yet more rule questions...Would the hound's Ferocious ability work with ranged attacks? I'm inclined to read it as no, but I'm unsure. Also, could the hound's Ferocious be used with the wyvern's Savage? I'm also thinking this would likely not work, since the hound requires the PC to attack and the wyvern's ability requires the wyvern to attack. Thank you for the updated rules and assets! They're all great. I particularly like the masked asset. Great flavor and concept.

Hey every one, just a quick word about my play test of Ironsworn tonight.

Hey every one, just a quick word about my play test of Ironsworn tonight. I wanted to try streaming on twitch and a solo game of Ironsworn seemed perfect for that. So I did a 2,5 hours long stream and it was fantastic playing the game (had maybe 8-10 viewers, mostly friends). I think I’ll do it again, to continue the story, we’ll see if the viewers keep coming, but even if they don’t I do like the idea of having a record of my session. The stream is in French and can be found here on twitch : http://www.twitch.com/cendrones/ . And on YouTube : https://youtu.be/jFdGWZaZ61A I’ll try to find time to add English subtitles. Thanks for this fantastic game ! http://www.twitch.com/cendrones/

Happy #inspirationmonday, and another look inside my Ironsworn inspiration art folder. I've got loads of art for landscapes and villages, and this painting by Sergey Vasnev is one of my favorites. I love the rugged but beautiful environment. I especially love the love the lighting, which is reminiscent of classic landscapes by Albert Bierstadt. Are the figures on the right returning home, seeking shelter, or preparing for an assault against those formidable walls? More from the artist: https://www.artstation.com/sergey_vasnev

Hi there! I just wanted to tell you what my dream RPG should have.

Hi there! I just wanted to tell you what my dream RPG should have. First, I never liked settings with too much detail. I prefer just some rough sketches and options to customise them to my liking. I also like human-centric fantasy with truly mysterious and mythical magic, not necessarily rare - just not as mundane or "scientific". So magical healing, magical universities, magical robots and so on are a no-go. I don't like city settings with all the politics and struggles for power, I prefer large swathes of wilderness dotted with some points of light - small villages where tight communities endure hardships together - and possibly with fairy folk hiding deep in the forests and monsters lurking in the deepest caves. I also enjoy heroic fantasy, where characters might be flawed or struggling, but are generally heroes who want to make the world a better place, embarking on long and perilous journeys and exploring the wilderness. As for mechanics, I think that the idea of Pbt...

I've been doing a bit more co-op play lately and ran into a rule question.

I've been doing a bit more co-op play lately and ran into a rule question. Regarding Aid your Ally being used in concert with certain Assets that give a bonus to Momentum when Securing an Advantage. Specifically, who gets the extra +1 Momentum? Example: A PC with the Ranger Path makes the Aid your Ally move by scouting ahead using his knowledge of woodcraft and then relaying information back to an Ally about the road ahead. Assume a Strong Hit. The alley then gets +2 Momentum from the Aid your Alley move. All good so far. Question 1: Does the Aid your Ally move still count as Securing an Advantage for the purpose of the benefits from the Ranger Path? -- The +1 on the action die roll and the +1 Momentum on a hit. I would say yes, because of the wording of Aid your Ally (i.e. When you Secure an Advantage in direct support of an ally . . .) Question 2: Who gets the additional +1 Momentum granted by the Ranger Path asset? The Ranger who made the roll or the Ally who was receivi...

I wanted a bit of clarification to make sure I'm running things right.

I wanted a bit of clarification to make sure I'm running things right. The way I'm reading it, in combat every strong hit gives the PC initiative. Every weak hit or miss makes them lose initiative. Is this true? I'm also wondering about ranged vs. melee combat. Would you allow PCs to use whichever weapons/stats they want, or would it be restricted by narrative? E.g., an archer might start at range attacking with edge, but a pay the price result could mean enemies closing to melee range, and the archer would have to switch to melee weapons or face danger to move away. Or would you say the archer can continue making ranged attacks against an enemy using melee?

Hi there!

Hi there! I discovered Ironsworn while looking for GM-less systems and decided to give it a try last night. I played solo, and I was really impressed with how well it prompts you into assembling a a really engaging narrative with both the moves and the many prompts. I do have a couple of questions/concerns, though. In every battle I had, I ended up in a situation where I had done enough harm to fill up the enemy's progress track, but then got stuck getting weak hit after weak hit on the clash move. So, I kept doing harm that meant nothing, and taking even more harm, and it took me forever to end the fight because I struggled to get a strong hit, despite my + 2 Iron. It also made my Sunderer Asset feel kind of useless, as I never had any need for additional damage, and constantly found myself losing momentum. Outside of Battle, I found I either failed or got weak hits on most of my Journey rolls, and started running really low on all my tracks about halfway through the adventure. I ...

Hey everyone!

Hey everyone! Me and my gaming group (counting five gentlemen, me included) has recently started our first campaign of Ironsworn in co-op mode. We're through session 0 (with a bit of play) and session 1 and, in general, we've had a blast playing it. Nonetheless, a few questions arised as we played, so I hoped I could get different perspectives or clarification on a few issues: 1) How do you handle fights where PCs outnumber their foes? In our situation 3 PCs ambushed 2 guards to sneak through a breach in a palisade. We all agreed the situation wasn't worth Enterning the fray and it didn't really seem like a Battle. We settled on Securing an advantage for our main goal (inflitrating the town) by knocking out the two guards, although we also considered using Face danger, 2) How do you handle matches on challange dice? In our case one player kept getting them on fails during combat, once both on a failed Clash roll and subsequent Endure harm roll. Soon we were out of ideas...

So happy to join this community and what seems as a system that will be taking a lot of my forthcoming time!!!! Two newbie questions that my search here did not find any answers: a) How do people usually deal with dungeoncrawls? As Journeys or a Scene Challenge? Ignore/substitute it completely for/with other Moves? Say for example I take a vow to find the missing daughter in a mine. One milestone is probably searching in the corridors/tunnels and maybe a small cave system discovered. How would you handle this? We went for Undertake a Journey without clear steps in order to allow the steps to surprise us on what we may find down there. b) I would not talk balance in such type of a game but the following scenario popped up: Troublesome Vow & Quest; Pick up a companion as positive complication during the quest; very bad miss and matched challenge dice in the aforementioned dungeoncrawl + naughty ORacle dice roll leads to betrayal and we randomly rolled the henchman turned traitor lev...

Do you use the endure harm move every time your health is reduced?

Do you use the endure harm move every time your health is reduced? Initially I thought yes, but it makes some odd results. Are certain abilities seem based on automatic damage, like drawing the circle and using the option to bloody yourself, or the swordmaster's ability to take -1 health while swearing an iron vow? It would be a bit strange to shrug off the damage you just did to yourself, or to be an ironclad who can take many instances of 1 damage and largely ignore them. How should I run this?

Had a look back at my early Ironsworn drafts (housed in OneNote), and did a double-take when I saw the February 2016 edit date. Apparently, I've been working on the game about a year longer than I thought. Where does the time go? Sidenotes: Ironsworn once used "Pathways" instead of assets. There were four core pathways: Warrior, Rider, Hunter and Mystic. Pretty close to standard PbtA playbooks, with the difference being you could choose à La Carte from any pathway. Playbooks had standard and expert moves. Once you accrued a certain number of moves along a particular pathway, you could select from expert moves. At some point, I decided to disentangle moves from pathways, and those became assets.

How does initiative and turn order work with multiple PCs and enemies?

How does initiative and turn order work with multiple PCs and enemies? As I understand it, having initiative doesn't necessarily mean you act first, it just means you are in control of what's happening and can make choices, choose who to attack, etc. If the enemy has initiative, it means you need to respond to whatever they do. Say the PCs are fighting two groups of broken. PCs Merry and Pippin have taken some damage already and aren't really fighters, so they just want to avoid getting hit more. They rolled poorly and do not have initiative. The PC Boromir is a combat monster with ironclad, swordmaster, shieldmaster, and weapon master who would like nothing more than to smash the enemy, and he has initiative. For narrative reasons, the NPC broken groups are all trying to take down Boromir. So what happens? - Boromir has initiative, so he uses strike on one of the broken groups. - The broken want to target Boromir. Boromir attacked one, so that seems to "use" its ...

Happy #inspirationmonday! Here's another look inside my Ironsworn inspiration folder. This time, we've got a direct sequel to the great illustration from last week ( https://plus.google.com/u/0/+ShawnTomkin/posts/bBJA6Sod7pw ). This one, appropriately, is titled "For you, Mom". Awesome art by Roman Kupriyanov: https://romankupriyanov.artstation.com

The Ritualist path reduces the xp cost for gaining/upgrading rituals, if you first tattoo the essence of the ritual onto your skin. Does this mean to pick one ritual and tattoo it, or can you tattoo more than one? Also, it looks like the second ability for the Storyweaver path allows the PC and allies to choose +1 spirit or +1 momentum with the relax option while making camp, while typically relax only gives +1 spirit. So is the value here being able to double up on momentum boosts when desired?

Can I burn momentum without cancelling any dice?

Can I burn momentum without cancelling any dice? I can see it being worthwhile with the Swordmaster focus to gain damage, or possibly a combination of paths that allow for resetting to a higher momentum value. Going from the rules, it's clearly intended that PCs are "stuck" once they go negative, and can't just burn it for a reset. What if I'm at 0 or 1?

Happy Sunday, everyone.

Happy Sunday, everyone. Here's an Ironsworn one-sheet rules reference. It's meant as a handout for new players, or as a prompt to remember some of the mechanics that might be forgotten during play. I'll have this up on the website with the 1.0 release in (hopefully) a week or so. Thanks! https://drive.google.com/open?id=11tr3wWw-6gz5KaOkJoz_NzvvnSAoDN2a

The rulebook suggests that Ironsworn is best for small groups.

The rulebook suggests that Ironsworn is best for small groups. If I play Ironsworn with a slightly larger group (1 GM plus five players) what kind of trouble might I encounter?

How should I visualize progress moves?

How should I visualize progress moves? I'm having some trouble with these. I can have a raider completely beaten and defeated with all 10 progress boxes filled, but further damage won't do anything. If I get unlucky and roll two 10s on the End The Fight move, I will fail to kill him and have a dire consequence (being mortally wounded, having someone with me killed, losing an important objective or vow, etc.) Am I understanding this correctly? Is there a way to defeat enemies without giving them a small chance of causing serious damage in return? In a game with ~4 PCs (our current gaming group), this'll come up sooner or later. EDIT: Also, how do progress moves work for journeys? If you're nearly there at, say, 9 boxes filled, what happens when you fail the roll and have to reset to 1 box? Did we discover that Rivendell has been burned to the ground and we have to track down the survivors to get where we wanted to go, or something like that?
I know the POD is supposed to be coming this month....but, like, how soon?

A friend and I did our own playtest last night.

A friend and I did our own playtest last night. I must say, I'm really taken by Ironsworn. The initiative system, the progress track and End the Fight move mesh together so well. I feel its the most innovative game I've seen since Apocalypse World itself. We found it a bit challenging to come up with ways to fill vow progress tracks, but we're still learning. Also, can we make the End the Fight move after a Strong Hit on the Face Danger move?

I’m curious about the origins of Varou names.

Image
I’m curious about the origins of Varou names. Some of them sound quite amusing to Polish (or other Slavic language) speaker: Jarek is a diminutive of Jarosław which happens to be my name ;) Jasna means “bright” in Polish. Iskra means “spark” in Polish. Charna sounds exactly like “czarna”, which means “black” in Polish. Vata sounds like “wata”, which means “cotton wool” in Polish. Radka is a diminutive of Radosława, Polish female name. Evka sounds exactly like “Ewka”, which is a diminutive of Ewa, Polish female name. Some other including Neda, Zora and Vojan are Balkan Slavic (e.g. Serbian) names. So, I’m not sure whether it is indended, but Varou have Slavic flavour. Maybe there should be an add-on, in which players are Varou defending their homeland against nasty Ironlander invaders ;) Or someone will add some creatures from Slavic bestiary, such as these: https://slowianskibestiariusz.pl/en/bestiary/ Pic related ;)

Preview of a couple of new image spreads coming with the final Ironsworn rulebook. I wanted to introduce some visuals around coastal environments, which got short shrift in earlier drafts. Lots of work making these happen, but I'm really happy with how they turned out.

One thing I really like in some of the RPGs books that I have read, is the Touchstones/inspiration page, citing music, books, movies, series, videogames... that relate to the game. If you were to create one for Ironsworn, what would you include? Music: Wardruna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyzGRbbha3E Heilung: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrIUrsCMfQg The Witcher 3 OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLSdl-CdOBo Videogames: The witcher 3 Other RPGs: Symbaroum (the lore as kind of the same feeling, IMO) Which ones would be yours?

Does the Creative Commoms License mean people are free to create games with different genres/settings based on Ironsworn? If so, maybe Shawn should consider some branding requirements for derivative games? E.g. “Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA)” for games based on The Apocalypse rules set. So, for Ironsworn derived games, maybe “Forged from Ironsworn (FfI)”?

14 - Finding Allies.pdf

It has been too long since I put one of these up. Alas, life gets in the way of writing and rolling. Branwhyn and Corinna finally return to Crow's Perch only to come upon another unlikely pair that has sought refuge in the Ironhold. Will they be allies in the coming council? And will the other Thanes pledge aid to liberate the Ironhold of Twin Rivers from the Broken? Chapter 14 - Finding Allies As always, thank you to those who read these stories. I hope they are enjoyabe and inspire. Comments, critiques, and charges of heresy are always welcome. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1qPu0jFYP6xCUq4xqVrYgAJXQqxX-qOP4

Two quick questions, I've read over the rules and maybe I missed it but here they are: 1. Is there a way to remove the Maimed condition? I don't really need it for this character because they are Battle Scarred but I would like to know. 2. Can a Stat be reduced to 0? Narrative Reasons: I was curious because my character was Maimed by a Varou, which in my version of the Iron lands are flavored as having a Lycanthrope somewhere in their blood line hence the Blood call. So my idea was that my character was inflicted with something reducing Edge to 0 but enhancing their senses and pack like nature increasing their Heart and Wits.

After some wrestling with an old scar tissue on my cornea I'm finally able to once again use my eyes as they were ment to be used, SO here´s my final versions of the Inkarnate templates. :) If you want to use them as templates in Inkarnate you "import" them as a single layer by adding them as a custom brush texture. As they´re .jpg files you can also print them as they are if you wish, eventhough the resolution unfortunately is kind of low. - Ironlands blank = a blank map with region borders marked. - Ironlands blank + region names = same as above but with the regions named. - Ironlands final = the final version with terrain features and region names. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dczn82cul6uqxj6/AADLJsD8HDGTeKXL-Lh7uZjMa?dl=0

Hey Shawn Tomkin, Rolegate has just included another cool feature called helpers, where instructions for playing can be created (as a mix between tutorial and reference). Are you ok with text from the book (mainly moves) being copied verbatim into it? I would of course include link to your site and acknowledge that it is your creation.

So, I remember reading a guideline telling me I shouldn't make the same combat move more than 3 times in a row.

So, I remember reading a guideline telling me I shouldn't make the same combat move more than 3 times in a row. Do I have that right? So, what if you keep rolling Clash and getting weak hits, or misses for that matter. What other moves can you make when you don't have initiative? Or, are Strike and End the Fight the only moves you can't make without initiative?
