Can someone quickly explain the combat system to me like I'm 5?

Can someone quickly explain the combat system to me like I'm 5? I'm very new to RPGs and really wanna get into Ironsworn but I just can't understand the combat. So let me see if I have this right 1. To begin combat I have to enter the fray to check for initative 2. Clash or Strike depending on initiative 3. Pay the Price if I fail So do I pay the price and take damage and then keep going? Or do I just pay the price and call it a day? I'm not really sure how to end a fight that doesn't end in one of our deaths because I don't have enough progress to make the End a Fight move. I'm sorry if this sounds dumb I just really have no idea what I'm doing and I've re-read the rules a bunch haha Thanks in Advance :)

Chapter 5 of Valgrym's Tale (Ironsworn Solo in Dark Ages Britain). I'm still enjoying this solo creative process. https://db4sgowjqfwig.cloudfront.net/campaigns/112704/assets/895528/Ironsworn_Story_005.pdf You can find links to the earlier chapters at http://igm4u.com/f/ironsworn-actual-play-reports I took it a bit easier on our hero this time but Ironsworn seems reluctant to let you finish a Quest and likes to give you more complications (that's not a bad thing). https://db4sgowjqfwig.cloudfront.net/campaigns/112704/assets/895528/Ironsworn_Story_005.pdf

I'm curious if anyone has used initiative and/or combat moves for "verbal jousting" -- arguments, debates, bargaining, diplomacy, politics, etc? I realize the Relationship moves are intended for non-combat interactions, but I can really see initiative and some of the combat moves easily tweaked and applied to a match of wits and words.

People, this is a blog made in Brazil, and the posts are usually written in Portuguese. But once I have done interviews with authors from several countries, some of these stories will also be published in English, as I believe it may be in the interest of many people from other countries as well. I meant to share these a while ago, but only just got around to setting up a proper PDF with card-backs for them. Four custom assets created with feedback from the stellar Ironswron Discord server, and an extra special shout out to Justin Gordon who co-authored the Bear companion. It's three new companions: Bear, Harrow Spider (my favorite), and Phantom (probably the poorest of the bunch). Also one custom combat talent in the form of the Slinger. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ntgskhz80xkzfie/AADKiw4v9toPlDeRp8blhY-La?dl=0 I'd really appreciate some feedback on these, as well as suggestions for more custom assets. Also, if you end up using any these in your Ironsworn games let me know, I'd love to hear about it. Edit: The wording for the "venomous" move on the harrow spider has been updated to make its function more clear. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ntgskhz80xkzfie/AADKiw4v9toPlDeRp8blhY-La?dl=0

Chapter 4 of Valgrym's Tale (Ironsword Solo)

Chapter 4 of Valgrym's Tale (Ironsword Solo) I really seem to have gotten somewhere with this session of the solo game. The STORY that emerged seems very satisfying, the ADVENTURE improved and the game mechanics really contributed. https://db4sgowjqfwig.cloudfront.net/campaigns/112704/assets/894014/Ironsworn_Story_004.pdf You can find links to all the chapters in my Blog at http://igm4u.com https://db4sgowjqfwig.cloudfront.net/campaigns/112704/assets/894014/Ironsworn_Story_004.pdf

New player getting set up

New player getting set up Hi community! I’m prepping for my first solo play of Ironsworn, having just picked up the PDF. The various play aids and layout of materials is excellent and I’m hoping some of you can share description and/or photos or your play space. As a solo player with small children in the house, I have little time or space for my game materials and am very keen on keeping a minimal foot print. Has anyone used moleskines or bullet journals to manage documents? What about pocketmods or other alternatives for the asset cards? Thanks for sharing!

Hey, I can’t open the PDF rulebooks from rpgthru on my iPad - neither iBooks, Bluefire, kindle og Acrobat reader works (the latter says the file is corrupted) - anyone else experiencing the same? The worksheets, etc. work fine, it’s just the rulebooks (single-page and spread version).

Some Ironsworn updates!

Image
Some Ironsworn updates! The Ironsworn Lodestar quick reference guide and print-on-demand asset cards are getting finalized and will be available in September. Lodestar (see preview below) will be a 34-page booklet available in PDF and print-on-demand. It will contain mechanics summaries, character creation, moves, oracles (plus a bonus oracle), new art, and more. I hope that it will be perfect as a table reference that is a bit slicker than current print-and-play materials, or as a convention game handout. Errata for the Ironsworn rulebook seems to be (thankfully) minimal. I'll be updating the downloads and DriveThruRPG page with the latest PDF's in September. Thanks for the continued support!
How would I reskin assets for a star wars world?

Just a random thought for the day.

Just a random thought for the day... I just realized that it would take nothing to reskin Ironsworn as a Samurai game. You could if you wanted to rename a few things sword->Katana, giant->Oni, etc but really there is no reason that the Ironlands had to be colonized by not-samurai as by not-vikings. But really one could still use the word sword and see a katana, wakizashi or jian instead of an ulfberht. Samurai were concerned with promises and honor which maps well to iron vows. Even the available rituals work pretty much as is for a fantasy orient as well as they do for a northern European base. Nothing really to say there but that it occurred to me and I'm not seeing anything that would steer you wrong. Edit: I guess changing the name tables would be a thing but really what else would you have to modify.
Would it be possible to merge the two maps on p112 ? A blank region map with the relief. That would be so awesome !

Branwhyn and company finally reach Twin Rivers only to find earlier missteps have made the situation far worse. Allies dwindle and new vows are sworn. Chapter 16 - Twin Rivers Thank you to those who read and of course Shawn Tomkin who created this wonderful system and world for us to let our immaginations run wild in. Has anyone tried adding in conditions/resistance/other strategic elements to combat?

Has anyone tried adding in conditions/resistance/other strategic elements to combat? I love the game, but I want enemies to feel like a little more than cosmetic reskins of the five difficulty levels. I'm thinking things like the classic stun, freeze, etc. I know this can be hard to accomplish with Ironsworn's player-only moves, so I was curious if someone had figured it out. If not, I'll probably spend my free time this week taking a crack at it.
Adventuresmith would be a great location for the random tables.

For those of you who are running (or have run) Ironsworn with a couple of players and a GM, is there anything worth keeping in mind or any good advice in general? We’re all familiar with PbtA games in general, but I’ve never run one with only two players. Should I consider playing it in co op instead, with the three of us as players?

In my previous games, I always used Ironsworn in combination with some kind of wargame with which I resolved fights.

In my previous games, I always used Ironsworn in combination with some kind of wargame with which I resolved fights. I am soon going to try Ironsworn combat and I expect it to be as great as the rest of the game. Since I was initially confused by the several moves involved, I have drawn this flow-chart in order to have a high-level view of how things work. Though the diagram is much simplified, e.g. by ignoring the difference between Strong and Weak Hits and excluding suffer moves, I think it was helpful to me. If I understand correctly, the structure is mostly symmetrical: the side with initiative can either manoeuvre (Secure an Advantage or Face Danger) or attack (Strike or Clash). If they have some kind of leverage, players have the option of trying to exit the fight by "negotiation" (Compel) at any moment. If they are being effective (Strong Hit), they can try to End the Fight by overcoming the opponent with a final attack.

Just played my first game of Ironsworn (Solo).

Just played my first game of Ironsworn (Solo). Really, really enjoyed it! I decided to write it up as I was going - Story in one column and Game Mechanics in a second column so they fall alongside. I've set this in Dark Ages Britain, in the year 999 and have based the style and setting on a novel by Poul anderson called "The Broken Sword" - it has vikings, a fading Faerie realm, old gods, Christian Britain. The PDF can be found at https://db4sgowjqfwig.cloudfront.net/campaigns/112704/assets/891807/Ironsworn_Story_001.pdf I haven't got very far with the story in this first session, but I enjoyed it immensely so far, and found the Ironsworn rules to be incredibly useful for shaping the narrative and providing simple mechanisms to resolve conflicts. First 4 pages are a bit of historical googling to get some basic info about Britain in the year 999 and a map, followed by some ideas for tweaking the World Truths to match my setting, then I did the character creation, the ...

I prefer a more urban/intrigue-based campaign than Ironsworn is currently set up for.

I prefer a more urban/intrigue-based campaign than Ironsworn is currently set up for. In order to do that, I felt the focus needed to shift away from journeys towards relationships. I wanted something that could emulate a slow-building Jane Austen-style courtship so I replaced the Bond mechanic with something closer to Undertaking a Journey and Reach Your Destination. I also tried to make the moves capable of modeling friendships and not just romance. The new mechanics engage with two new character types, Your Esteemed (the character you are trying to form a meaningful relationship with) and Your Rival (the character opposing you). Your Rival gets a progress track of their own (it indicates the strength of their relationship with Your Esteemed). If the Rival's track ever fills up completely, you must immediately succeed at Challenging your Rival to delay their bond from becoming permanent, forever destroying your chances. This is the first time I’ve ever tried to hack an rpg and I...

Chapter 2: The Rot Spreads & The Gods Smile

Originally shared by Paul Staxx Spraget Chapter 2: The Rot Spreads & The Gods Smile I followed the muddy riverside path home towards Brightmire. The clouds had blackened and the howling winds blowing in off the Blacksump Estuary had begun to drive the rains in at an aggressive angle. The pain in my wrist and back from the Marsh Rat’s attack throbbed with a burning, insistent ache. I decided it was wise to seek shelter under a small copse of skeletal trees and rest for a short while until the bleak weather had passed. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HJPVbgb8QtaU-jXPDRwv-xjezkZgXIi3q7dZKWrw6gM/edit?usp=sharing

Hello!

Hello! I've started a solo campaign of Ironsworn, which is my first attempt at both Ironsworn and a solo RPG. This first session I introduce the character of Verena Boarwater, a marshmaiden herbalist from Brightmire in The Flooded Lands. The text veers between an in-character journal and OOC commentary on the game mechanics. Thank you to Shawn Tomkin for creating such a fascinating game and to the Ironsworn community for inspiring me to post this AP! Mark +1bond.

Where are you supposed to write your Bonds on the character sheet?

Where are you supposed to write your Bonds on the character sheet? I was a bit confused when creating my character. I see the track Bonds on the sheet, but I was not sure where I should write the names from the NPC I had bonds with. Also, are each NPC should have its own Bond track or is the track shared amongst all of your Bonds? Also, where you guys usually write down your equipment? I know it's not emphasised in the game, although there's still a step in character creation that tells you to write down relevant equipment/gear. I ended up writting 2-3 items in the bottom margin of the sheet. I kinda wished there was a "note" section on the sheet or something.

I was exploring RoleGate after someone mentioned it here a few days ago and noticed there's a solo Ironsworn game on there. I clicked through and found this Google spreadsheet character sheet -- is this an "official" template and/or does anyone know the source for a blank one (when you Make a Copy ... you will have a lot of info and comments to delete out) ? :-)

Shawn Tomkin Any plan of releasing the Oracles tables as separate condensed worksheet? (p.174-190)

Shawn Tomkin Any plan of releasing the Oracles tables as separate condensed worksheet? (p.174-190) It was a bit of a hassle to reference back to the book each time I wanted to consult the Oracle. I have in mind something like 2 2-sided pages with all the tables fitted in there.

So I've started my first solo game.

So I've started my first solo game. During a perilous journey I got waylaid by a severe snowstorm. I immediately written a track for "beating" the storm but I've noticed there's not really a move that gives me progress (I taught face danger would make sense as I tried to build a shelter and make a fire). I can easily hack this but is there a way as per RAW to get progress form a passive enemy such as the weather?

Shawn Tomkin I'm guessing you've already discussed this elsewhere, but I haven't seen it.

Shawn Tomkin I'm guessing you've already discussed this elsewhere, but I haven't seen it. What made you decide to use fixed-length progress tracks with varying-intensity progress (varying numbers of ticks), rather than the [perhaps] more intuitive fixed-intensity progress and varying-length tracks? It's the only slightly puzzling bit to me

Here's a sneak peek at something else getting hammered into shape here at the Ironsworn forges.

Here's a sneak peek at something else getting hammered into shape here at the Ironsworn forges. Ironsworn Lodestar is a slim but powerful guidebook designed for quick reference during play. It will be available in print and PDF in letter-sized (8.5x11) format, and will contain: - Rules Summaries - Moves - Oracles (including, perhaps, a bonus oracle or two) - Character options, including quick builds for various archetypes, and alternate stat arrays for grim, perilous, and heroic play - More? Perfect for giving each player at your table their own mini-Ironsworn rulebook, or just as a quick reference for solo players, the Lodestar will be available in the coming weeks. The print version will be aggressively priced. The PDF will be free, and a convenient way to print your own one-stop-shop Ironsworn reference materials.

Hi !

Hi ! So... where do I start ? Hum... ok. Well, yesterday I was quite a bit hyped with how to make a "Sling" asset. I have to admit that it is my ultmost defeat. Like a pair of 10 on the challenge dices and a crappy 1 on the action die. I just can't fathom how to balance a "combat talent". But, in my pathetic attempt to make it, I envisionned some other assets. I submit them there to get the help of the community at making them more balanced, smooth or "ironswornable". BLOOD-MADNESS (RAGE/BERSERKER/… ?) When Wounded … O Clouded by your murderous intents. When you Strike or Clash, you inflict +1 harm. In this state, if you win, you do not spare your foe. O Pain feels good … When you Endure Harm gain +1 momentum, if you are also Maimed gain +2 instead. O You become blinded by your rage. You cannot choose Face Danger or Secure an Advantage in combat, when you Strike or Clash, add+1 and take +1 momentum on a hit. TRAPPING O When you make a trap Secure an A...

I looked back through the archives a bit, but didn't see what I thought would be a recommendation for inspirational reading for Ironsworn... I just started listening to the audiobook version of Patrick Rothfuss' 'The Name of the Wind' (book 1 of The Kingkiller Chronicles), and I can't get it out of my head now as I continue to read my hardcover of Ironsworn this evening! I put off reading that book for far too long, it seems.

*Bonds*: Can bonds be with the dead?

*Bonds* : Can bonds be with the dead? A destroyed community? Before or after the fact? Perhaps it's a strange question, but I envision my character with such a bond. New to all this, I'm not sure I really understand the implications if the person/entity is dead/gone or dies/destroyed.

Hello there !

Hello there ! I just got the game this week, I heard about it via the youtube channel of +Julien Pouard. I understood there will maybe be a french translation, so I'm waiting a little bit to order an hardbook... First, I have to say that I don't find this game good... good is not the right word. I find it SPLENDID. It work very well and and combines elegance and simplicity. And so i wanted to say "well done and thank you!" to Shawn Tomkin for this. Before leaving to keep on my current game, I would like to ask 6 questions about the rules, still unsolve for me : - what is the base damage for a dagger ? (a knife is 1 for me, and dagger 2 since it is meant to kill, but was it designed that way ?) - Can I use the asset "BRAWLER" (non deadly weapon) with a staff, since the staff is pictured as a 1harm weapon in "LONG ARM" and so can I use theses 2 assets with a staff ? - can we use "BLADE BOUND" combined with "DUELIST" ? and does ...

Can somebody explain to me how the Sojourn move works? I don't get it. Why you need to roll twice?

p.53 typo Combat moves (page 78) usually specify when you make the move (with our without initiative) and whether you take or lose initiative as part of the outcome. :) I LOVE the initiative mechanic btw! Very clever!

Thank you to Geek Gamers for a great walkthrough of Ironsworn. Originally shared by Geek Gamers Ironsworn is an incredible RPG designed by Shawn Tomkin that is available for free as well as a new print version. This is designed for solo and coop (as well as group) play from the ground up and offers one of the best experiences I've had yet with a system when playing solo. Eventually I am going to post some gameplay videos but for now I have just posted a detailed look inside the print version of the book. You can get a sense of how the material is narratively driven, what kinds of oracle tables are provided, and the tools and apparatus in the system for generating the world. I'm not affiliated with this game or its designer in any way. I just really love this material and think any soloist out there should check it out. https://youtu.be/gr3q2ezJX2Q

Hey all.

Hey all. I've just sort of gotten my first solo campaign going and I've already hit a bit of a snag, and I was hoping that maybe a few people could throw some ideas at me and see what sticks. My character is in something of a tight spot; he and the woman he's sworn to guide somewhere are facing off against a small band of Fomors (eventually I'm going to submit my truths worksheet and some encounters I've worked up; for now just picture Warhammer beastmen). He's not a combat monster to begin with and is already pretty badly wounded, but the one thing he has in his favor is a talisman that gives its user berserker powers, which he has activated. Because apparently nothing can ever go to plan in this game, he is not fully in control of the talisman, but it is definitely active. My question is how would you suggest this be handled mechanically? Is it in the spirit of the game to just give him a straight up +2 to Iron while it's active? If he goes that route...

Hey all, I had a question about the experience others have had with the relative power of the stats.

Hey all, I had a question about the experience others have had with the relative power of the stats. I started a solo campaign and envisioned my character background as being a hunter from the hinterlands. So I took Wits as my top skill, followed by Shadow and Edge so they could step silently and be deadly with a bow. My first issues cropped up as I realized that Edge dosen't quite measure up to Iron, which can be used on every combat move you can use Edge for plus several other rather important moves as well. But I managed to solve that issue after I realized that fighting from a distance shouldn't have the same consequences as fighting in close. From then on I greatly reduced how often I Paid the Price though Suffer Harm when missing on a +Edge move, and taking less harm meant that my Iron-starved character's reduced ability to suffer harm well or heal themselves mattered less, and using Edge felt a lot better. However, now I've run into a bigger problem: Heart. It...

Shawn Tomkin I'm curious about the reasons behind the kinda wacky numbers of the Ask the Oracle move.

Shawn Tomkin I'm curious about the reasons behind the kinda wacky numbers of the Ask the Oracle move. 11+ 26+ 51+ 76+ 91+ It's kinda hard to remember (not that you really need to). I guess it's just increments of 25 except for the first and last and then adding 1 to all but why?

I haven't been on here in a while, but still playing.

I haven't been on here in a while, but still playing. I noticed on the most recent version that I was mentioned as a playtester! I'm honored that any of my comments and or questions might have contributed - even in the slightest - to this amazing game. I can't wait to get my hands on the hardcover.

Does the Ward ritual only apply to enemies?

Does the Ward ritual only apply to enemies? I'm picturing the players setting up a Ward around their campsite at night, and then wondering about how many stray deer, squirrels, and so on cross the border and grant +1 momentum. My first thought was that it applied just to significant characters, but I don't think it's intended for PCs to be able to walk back and forth a couple times to build up momentum. Also, how long does a Ward last? Is there anything preventing a PC from making several of them? I'm picturing it lasting maybe 24 hours, or until sunrise or sunset, or something like that, with a PC only able to make one at a time, but I'm not sure what was intended.

I wanted to bump this.

I wanted to bump this. I know it's part of the archives of the group, but I just saw it today, while scrolling down to see what goodies I might've missed. I had always thought the image of the cover had been a very cool stock photo. This, however, has shown me there's far more than what meets the eye when it comes to Ironsworn! I would've never guessed! Impressive! Originally shared by Shawn Tomkin Just for fun, here's a look at the creation of the Ironsworn cover image.

Loving the game thus far.

Loving the game thus far. Provided a perfect solo timesink while on a 6hr train ride. My adventure has certainly gone in some directions I didn't anticipate. I don't know if it interests anyone, but is there a standard sort of place for writing up session notes? I'm recording my characters adventures in writing form, and it might be useful to others as an example of how the game is played (at least interpreted by me). But I wouldn't know where best to post such a thing (G+, Facebook, RPGGeek, etc?).

Just wanted to add my thanks here to Shawn Tomkin for his design of this fabulous game.

Just wanted to add my thanks here to Shawn Tomkin for his design of this fabulous game. I have started playing with my wife and she also loves the game. I love RPGs and am constantly acquiring more and trying them out if they pique my interest. My wife is usually disinterested in any RPG I aquire but this one has impressed her enough to actually inspire her to play. Follow up: Will there be more asset volumes or will there be just two? (I know you just put out Volume 2 but I Am greedy.)

The Volume 2 asset set for the Ironsworn RPG is now available.

For our first session I want to have a series of contests among all the nearby villages.

For our first session I want to have a series of contests among all the nearby villages. The contests would be things like wrestling, running, swimming in the ocean while wearing armor, telling riddles, making boasts or speeches, etc. The overall goal is to introduce players to the different stats and their uses. The village with the most victories overall would be declared the winner. A scene challenge feels like the right way to handle this, but I'm having trouble envisioning what the mechanics might look like. When a PC rolls a strong success on Face Danger, that probably means they win their current contest. What would a weak success mean, maybe coming in second or third? I'm also not sure what Secure Advantage might mean in these contexts. If I set the scene challenge at Formidable, maybe that means there are 10 contests overall and the PCs are competing in a group in them? Then Secure Advantage might mean setting up someone else to win, or possibly just doing their part o...

Today I decided to create an erasable character sheet, using a few elements I had around.

Today I decided to create an erasable character sheet, using a few elements I had around. I used: - 1 clear acetate sheet - a cutter and a ruler - some thin strips of masking tape - a printed photocopy of the character sheet - black acrylic paint with a brush First, I printed a character sheet on ordinary office paper. Because I wanted it to fit inside the book, I reduced the character sheet to half its size. Then, I folded the acetate sheet in half, and I placed the character sheet inside. I used the cutter and the ruler to trim the excess material around the borders. Once that was done, I used some strips of masking tape to close the borders, and with some acrylic paint (I chose black), I painted over the masking tape to give it a "rough edges" look.°° And, that was it! The cool thing about the acetate sheet is that it allows me to draw or write on top of it using an erasable marker, so no need to print new copies all the time! I hope this mini tutorial gives you some ideas...

So about asset cards - are they planned to be officially published?

So about asset cards - are they planned to be officially published? I want to buy the hardcover rulebook but shipping is pretty expensive to my country so I would like to wait for a bundle if there will be any. If not, it's already in the cart, so just say the word :)

The Volume 2 asset set will be available soon-ish. It will include 9 additional assets. Some of them the long-timers will have seen before, such as the Kindred (companion) and talisman (ritual). But, there will be some brand new ones, including the Waterborn (path), Rider (path), and Thunder-Bringer (combat talent). My personal fav is the Revenant, seen below.

Arrived today.
