is there a way to have a more high fantasy system?

is there a way to have a more high fantasy system? may be with a new asset system more close to d&d like magic systeme? (like a sort with level ) Edit : any way , very very interressing game, especially for solo rpg , thanks for the current works guys! 1st Proposal: Maybe take some idea from the "class warfare" of dungeon world for create a asset In a way the pc creation is close to the ironsworn one : take 3 classes and add starting moves , you can add move by leveling up

Shawn Tomkin are you keeping a changelog as we proceed through revisions to the preview release? If so, could it be made public? I'm up to the eyeballs right now and very worried I might be missing impactful rules changes before I get my next chance to play.

Dumb question, because I have the rules at home and could wait to look, but is there anyway to advance progress against a foe without Stirke or Clash? Maybe before 'Enter the Fray'? One day I'm really going to have to do a journey, combat, etc. flow chart of these moves and outcomes.

Branwhyn and a small band of Wardens move to retake an Ironhold that fell to the Broken and the fell magic of their Apostle. Against a full Ironhold of kith and kin whose minds are enslaved, stealth is the only option. I am still awed and humbled that people read and appreciate my stories. Thank you, I hope they inspire. Any thoughts/guidelines about when its appropriate to move all stats back up to full, as per the passage of time?

The more I think about the combat progression system in this game verses a typical HP enemy system, the more I see its value/genius for solitaire gaming. If I knew the monster I was fighting only started with 5 HP it kind of takes the excitement out of a scene, but in Ironsworn the abstraction of combat keeps even weaker fights still exciting.

Could there be the negative version of an asset

Could there be the negative version of an asset Then maybe as an optional rule a player could pick more than 3 but for each extra needs to take a negative.

I could use some clarification on the Wright [Path] Asset. For clarity sake, the core ability reads: "Using your specialty, with appropriate time and materials, you may 'Face Danger' or 'Secure an Advantage' by crafting or reparing a useful object. When you do, add +1 and take +1 momentum on a hit. You may suffer -1 supply to add +1 more (decide before rolling)." Do you make the roll when you build/repair the item in question or when you use the item? As an example, if the character was a Shipwright, like Floki from Vikings, and you build a ship. In my head, which to be fair is a pretty strange place, it makes more sense to make the 'Face Danger' roll with said bonus when on the water and facing a storm. However, the wording of the first sentence of the asset suggests you make the roll to build the ship in the first place and the ability to sacrifice supply to do so seems to support that. So, I'd appreciate if anyone could straighten me out. ...

Unexpected allies, dangerous terrain, and determined adversaries are Perils of Travel for Branwhyn and Corinna as they make the last leg of the journey back to Crow's Perch. A question for Shawn Tomkin: On the Bind [Rite], does it exhaust with the first ‘10’ you roll on the Chaellenge dice regardless of check or is it the first ‘10’ when using the relevant stat? I.E. I’ve enhanced Iron, but am rolling a Shadow and get a ‘10’. Does the Rite exhaust then or when I roll a ‘10’ using Iron? Thank you to everyone for reading, I hope these stories are an enjoyment. Hacking my way to another playtest.

Hacking my way to another playtest. Ironsworn just keeps delivering drama - very nice. Not happy with my own changes to the game though. https://voneisenhut.wordpress.com/2018/01/22/anatomy-of-a-firefight/

Loving the game design you’ve made!

Loving the game design you’ve made! I have been looking for this EXACT thing for a long time! Is there a way to support this, beyond word of mouth, or adding in playtest results? As far as playtesting goes, my group has all read the material and is in the process of planning our first session, we’ll be running a 3 way co-op. I haven’t found any glaring issues with the system of yet, and as a graphic designer, I applaud your efforts to organize and display your rules in the book. Well done.

Hi Shawn Tomkin, I have been playing on in my solo campaign and will post when I get a chance.

Hi Shawn Tomkin, I have been playing on in my solo campaign and will post when I get a chance. One thought I had was around the low magic setting of the Ironlands. I am a massive Lord of the Rings fan so the low magic, dangerous journey setting of the Ironlands appeals but as I play through it I was thinking of adding magic items, artifacts, etc. for added flavor. In LOTR, magic is a rare and wondrous thing and even Gandalf uses it sparingly. However, there are lots of "magic" swords, armor, rings, orbs, etc.. Basically the magic items add a lot of magic flavor to an otherwise very real world medieval setting. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on how to do magic items Ironsworn style.

Messing with some Assets at the moment. Here's one for review. Thoughts? Asset type: Blood Changeling 1. Elf blood. When you Compel or Forge a Bond with Elves, add +1 and take +1 momentum on a hit. 2. Changeling. Your appearance is somewhat malleable to situations. When you Face Danger with Deception, or Compel using charm, pacify, barter or convince, add +1. 3. Beast Friend. You may Face Danger or Compel using +heart against great beasts and animals.

Working on another session and a rules question came up.

Working on another session and a rules question came up. I took advantage of "Turn The Tide" and it says to add +1, I am assuming to the next Move. My next Move is "End The Fight". I just added +1 to the Progression. Does this sound right, or at least feasible? Or is it just for other non-Progress Moves?

It was bad.

It was bad. Really bad. Hence I gave this session the name, "Chamber of Missteps." Interesting discovery about the rules though. I mean I could have probably mitigated it better, but didn't want to contradict the narrative that came to mind while playing! Session link in the normal places on the wiki. Okay, I need some help, and yes I am trying to break it again...

Okay, I need some help, and yes I am trying to break it again... So I started working on my character sheet for Steel Caskets, where I wanted to play a character like the one in G.I. Combat's "Haunted Tank" graphic novel. The main character in it is a tank commander by the name of Jeb Stuart, an ancestor of the Civil War General, General Stuart. General Stuart's ghost comes to Jeb and helps him throughout the war, and since Jeb talks to a ghost, they all think it haunted... Anyway, while coming up with a character for the tank commander in a World War 2 Stuart tank, I got to thinking... This has been done, and though I really liked reading The Haunted Tank as a kid, I don't want to do the same thing over again. I want something different, so I took the idea of a haunted tank literally, and started running with it... Basically I want The Tank to be the character and the crew to be Companions! I think it has unlimited possibilities, though I admit I may be wrong, bu...

If anyone actually follows my HZD:HEZ AP, be assured it will be continued, probably this evening in fact as I hope to get another session in tonight. I have been working on a new Character and Assets for a WW2 tank crew AP though that I want to run as well, inspired by the graphic novel; G.I. Combat's Haunted Tank. I will probably run them in tandem so sessions my be slower coming than I'd like, if you fancy one over the other. I was hoping to finish the main vow in HEZ first, before starting the WW2 game, but dang if Jeremiah Wenneker didn't force my hand with his recent post of the S.M.S Ironsworn! Too cool not to!

So, with Revelation convention coming, it's time for me to print out some assets and get myself ready.

So, with Revelation convention coming, it's time for me to print out some assets and get myself ready. I was thinking of getting a ringbound copy of Preview 6 to have at the table. Shawn Tomkin question for you on allied NPCs and narrative.

Shawn Tomkin question for you on allied NPCs and narrative. I’m currently running a scenario with two PCs,mercenaries who have been compelled to join a secnd non-allied mercenary company (the PCs successfully lied about their alignment after a disastrous battle -they were on the losing side - and found themselves alone. Success came at a cost and the 2nd mercenary company suggested strongly that the PCs join their company for a mop-up operation). The PCs quickly find themselves confronted with a third mercenary band, the remains of another rogue company allied with the PCs former employer, which is looting part of the baggage train. Clearly, the PCs have a choice now of who to side with and I determined they would remain in their cover and attack the third mercenary band along with their new, faux allies, in an effort to simply get away from the aftermath ASAP. My question comes with how to best manage the NPC groupings as well as the PCs using a more narrative approach. In some sys...

I am slowly moving on with my solo WW2 Ironsworn / wargame mashup. In order to keep things simple, I am only using a limited subset of Ironsworn: I like the idea of having multiple PCs (three in this case) but I know from previous experiences with other systems that each character must be very "light" to keep the games manageable. Ironsworn is quite flexible and nicely fits my completely different (but still iron-intensive) setting. https://solounmondodicarta.wordpress.com/2018/01/11/sicily-1943-session3-tenente-murrus-ambush/ https://solounmondodicarta.wordpress.com/2018/01/11/sicily-1943-session3-tenente-murrus-ambush/

Sitting waiting on the work network to come online and my thoughts circle around to Ironsworn... I have been thinking of modding another solo rules set I bought recently to fit a genre I want to solo play in. I got to thinking what would I have to mod in Ironsworn to do the same genre. Which brought me to Assets, of course. Now as an Ironsworn and PbtA newb in general, Assets are new to me. I am familiar with FATE and Stunts, so was thinking, "Could we come up with a Mad Libs type of Asset creator for them like FATE does with Stunts?" Thoughts?

There is a bit of a prelude to explain a bit of what happened in our games so far. This excerpt falls in the timeline of about a month, and I do plan to get 3 or 4 sessions of solo in before calling the month good for IC reasons. As I am accepting more misses now and finally forced myself to let my story take a turn towards being grim and perilous, I noticed something with the endure harm move: If your health is 0, suffer -momentum ... Then, roll +iron or +health whichever is higher. //My health is at zero. Is it ever possible for my iron to be negative? Feels to me like i always should roll +Iron.

I am delighted to be running Ironsworn at revelationgames.org.uk in February. Three Ironsworn will head into the far north of the Tempest Hills, a perilous journey with a certain and glorious end. Glad to showcase the game and spread the word. Full update in late February. Terror in the Tempest Hills Kinsmen to the North are calling to you, Ironsworn. Horrors from the deep have surfaced and murder, strife and chaos is the result. You are to take the perilous journey North to the outermost Tempest Hills. If you make it, you must test your iron against the oldest and most evil of foes. Should you survive your legend is assured. http://revelationgames.org.uk

Arriving at Mournful Cairne with an oddly warm welcome, Branwhyn receives an unpleasant surprise and also encounters the Crone of the Swamp. I have a few more questions for Shawn Tomkin that came up in the play through. 1) When fighting multiple Progress tracks, do you End the Fight against each separately as the fiction and rolls allow? That seems like the intuitive answer, but I wasn't certain and couldn't find an answer in the rule book. 2) On the Veteran asset, it reads "When you Forage by looting the dead . . ." should Forage be replaced with Resupply? https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Qmnmq9yiG0hQnFUfLcGdbsd3DjxHHZs_

Shawn Tomkin I wrote a little bit about how i mesh Ironsworn/Mouse Guard and Perilous Wilds on my About page.

Shawn Tomkin I wrote a little bit about how i mesh Ironsworn/Mouse Guard and Perilous Wilds on my About page. I have to say, I am more enamored with Ironsworn every time I play. I only have one gripe with the system at the moment: Opposition never acts as long as you throw Strong hits. The flow chart states that after a Strong hit you ask "What do you do next." I know it is statistically unlikely, but sometimes I feel like I could kill a dragon with a knife by: Strike -> Strong hit -> Well I strike again -> Strong hit -> Strike -> ... I fell like really dangerous foes would do something even IF the hero suceeds... not sure whether the rules could just be interpreted differently (which I would gladly do) or if it's a design choice. On that point: I am rolling 10s again and lowered the stats of my character. Thanks for the insight! https://voneisenhut.wordpress.com/about/

Shawn Tomkin I’ve recently been working through a 2 PC scenario and have a couple of questions for you with respect to multi-player sessions: 1.) When traveling wit 2 or more PCs, do you just have one PC roll Undertake Journey (I assume this is the default)? Possibly have the 2nd player roll Aid Ally/Secure Advantage, if you want to have the second player provide assistance? 2.) Also, I assume on Journeys both players consume Supply as they are traveling, regardless of whether only one player is rolling for the Undertaking? 3.) Once travel has ended, either/both can roll for things like Make Camp and/or Resupply, correct? Dom’t know why that sort of threw me as I was working through the playtest - perhaps I’ve been so focused on solitaire play that breaking up the limelight sort of caught me off-guard. The scenario is simple enough - am converting a The One Ring scenario, having two Dwarves set-out on a search for lost companions. Chaos ensues. I couldn’t see a case for both making...

Just for discussion, in case anyone is interested in Wikis, and to let you know that I have dropped the WordPress blog in frustration, if you're a follower, sorry about that. It's just too hard to get the formating right. I've messed with Wikis since college, so it kind of comes naturally to me. So all future APs I do will be linked to the Wiki: I Roll Solo, see link below. http://irollsolo.tiddlyspot.com

Very crude, but a random stat array generator. I'm new to spreadsheets, so I'm not sure how to automate it nicely without refreshing. Hi Shawn

Hi Shawn, I am starting a solo play. I am using the default preview setting/assets, etc.. I found something strange as part of character creation that I wanted to run by you. I am coming from a D&D 5e background and perhaps I have missed something about Ironsworn and am incorrectly looking at this through that perspective in which case I look forward to learning the Ironsworn way of doing all this. I am creating a brains over brawn character who has a high wits stat (+3) and medium heart and Iron (+2) and low shadow and edge (+1). So far so good. When it came to adding assets I put myself in character and thought ok, as someone with wits what would I be attracted to? This is where I noticed that the ability stats don't seem to be balanced across assets. In the martial assets only archer uses wits but there are 3 martial assets that use Iron. Only long-arm uses edge and only cutthroat uses shadow. I guess the intent is to make Iron the primary stat for martial assets and ...

I am just reposting this as I think it got lost at the end of my other thread.

I am just reposting this as I think it got lost at the end of my other thread. I would still like some expert guidance on how to handle core clues. We have gamed Gumshoe, and infact one of our games is Confidential 121. But in solo or coop is it ok to just give the clue without a roll? But I still like the twist of the miss on gather information, so I still learn of the saboutage, but it is hot and coal dust is in the air, with my lantern, causing a further dust explosion (if I have my chemistry correct) My take is to gumshoe it, but being new to solo and coop play, was wondering what others do and if some guidance could be included in the book.

Hello Shawn, a (hopefully) quick question for you concerning the challenge dice.

Hello Shawn, a (hopefully) quick question for you concerning the challenge dice. I am curious about your thoughts on varying the dice for lesser/greater challenges or perhaps advantage/disadvantage. For example: lesser challenge/advantage: d8 typical challenge: d10 greater challenge/disadantage: d12 I suppose defining lesser/typical/greater could be tricky. I figured to ask you before I think to much on it in case you already found this to be cumbersome or detracting to play. (I can't seem to not start hacking rules even before I try them) Thank you for your thoughts and for your game!

I just finished reading another great write up, and it has me thinking, which in turn has me soliciting some input.

I just finished reading another great write up, and it has me thinking, which in turn has me soliciting some input. All the play tests that I have been reading are awesome, and seem to be... progressing faster per 'session'. They seem to be about the same length or word count, but so much more seems to happen in them. What am I missing? I just get the feeling now that my play through is kinda... lame or boring. Is it? Honestly. I'm enjoying it, but I haven't really felt any... action, since the initial Scrapper encounter. IDK, just a thought and maybe just a funk I am in. Happy New Years by the way!

Branwhyn's adventures continue and I'm moving towards a better understanding of the system.

Branwhyn's adventures continue and I'm moving towards a better understanding of the system. I am blessed that the opening narrative was well received, thank you to those who read, commented, and +1'ed it. This playthrough did raise a few mechanical question that I wanted to toss at Shawn Tomkin. The questions are below, thank you again for making a really wonderful game. -For the Compel move. On a weak hit, it says "as above". Does this mean that both the +1 momentum and +1 to Gather Information apply on weak hits as well as strong? -Regarding the Augury Rite. There is no activation roll, as with other Rites, it is only the Gather Information roll? -Further, does the Mystic Path stack in with Augury? Ergo, +1 to Action Dice and +1 to Momentum on a hit? The reason I ask is simply that if Augury is upgraded you can basically net 4 Momentum (2 from Gather, 1 from Upgraded Augury, and 1 from Mystic) pretty easily. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Jmh2OoHUdZZc...

Some minor updates this morning to the Ironsworn rulebook and moves handout.

Some minor updates this morning to the Ironsworn rulebook and moves handout. Nothing dramatic -- mostly some punctuation fixes and a couple of minor corrections. For anyone playing Ironsworn (thank you!), I'd recommend grabbing the latest moves handout since it contains a couple of wording clarifications. No reason to rush out and grab the latest version of the rulebook unless you are a completionist (and/or appreciate my continued struggles to correct PDF bookmark errors). Happy new year! https://www.ironswornrpg.com/downloads

Anyone tried a Sci-fi hack?

Anyone tried a Sci-fi hack? I have an idea for a story I've been kicking around for a few years. Firefly in The Expanse setting (pre-book 1) with a bit of The Martian/Artemis. I might try something like Bernhard Lutz, but with a spaceship crew.

Sicily 1943 Session:1 – 10 July 1943

Originally shared by Evandro Novel I have played a first (long) session with Valor&Victory (hex-based wargame) and Ironsworn. When I start a new campaign, I am always enthusiastic, so my current feelings might not be reliable, but I think the mashup can work wonderfully. In particular, the second battle I played was nothing particularly interesting per se. But the RPG intermezzo after the first battle (the amphibious landing at Gela) added interesting background and detail. The characters were motivated to capture the buildings not only because they had been ordered to so, but also because they knew they could have rested there for a few hours. And one of the Characters (the Italian-American Tony) interacted with a civilian gaining personal motivation to defeat the fascist leader. The fact that they miserably failed was amply compensated by the richness of the background story. I hope that others will try Ironsworn and share their experiences: my impression is that it is a great so...
