How about a young wyvern companion?

How about a young wyvern companion? It'll eat all your rations, and it's unpredictable in a fight, but it's tough-as-heck and can do some real damage. Plus, you'll be the talk of the town when you come rolling in with this guy. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1qVecWRF92sDR6pQSk_c08cK22Wtf2Xg4

I've had a few requests for an Ironsworn asset that is a human companion. To that end, here's a proposed option. "Role" for the first ability is obviously pretty open-ended, but gives you some control over how broad/narrow you'd like their help to be. The Skilled ability is a pretty light bonus, so I don't think it will break anything to go relatively broad. A scout would help when you Undertake a Journey, or sneak into position. A hunter would help when you Resupply, or when tracking a creature. A seer would help channel the spirits when you perform rituals. A skalde would help ingratiate yourself with the locals when you Sojourn, or when you Compel with +heart. etc. In short, if it makes sense in the fiction, take the bonus. As with any companion, if you leverage their aid and roll a 1 on your move die, the outcome should impact/affect your companion. Edit: Oops! Should be +4 on their health track. I"ll get that sorted later. https://drive.google.com/op...

Hi guys.

Hi guys. I`m new here. I have been playing ironsworn by weeks and i really like this game. It is Awesome. But i have some issues with suffer moves. First: the strong hit seems like a weak hit. You must pay some cost to gain health, spirit, etc. And the Weak hit says: Press on. Just that. No cost, no outcome. You can throw yourself from a cliff and: ¨This was nothing guys, im fine! i rolled a weak hit¨. And for last, till i make the face death move i roll 4 times! again, 4 ROLLS! maaaan, for what? I think it is too much. There is no need. This is kinda boring. Pbta game takes other route. Roll less, do more. Because of it pbta games is so fun. Let the dices on the table and tell for your friends some story.

Greetings folks. Here are two optional game mechanics I thought up to add some more variety to combat: Trading Blows As an option for the Strike and Clash moves, you can elect to toss caution to the wind to dish out more harm to your opponent. You must score a strong or weak hit to trade blows. When you trade blows, you deal +1 harm in exchange for half of the harm the opponent would deal to you (rounded up). You must announce your intention to trade blows before you make your roll. New Asset: Master at Trading Blows • Regardless of the opponent’s rank, the opponent deals 1 less harm to you when trading blows (minimum of 1). • When you trade blows, you also gain +1 momentum. • When you make a Suffer Harm move roll from trading blows, gain a +1 bonus to your roll. Risky Strike As an option, if you score a strong hit on a Strike move, you can elect to re-roll one or both of your challenge dice. Alternatively, if you score a weak hit on a Strike move, you can elect to re-roll the cha...

I ran a fun game of Ironsworn at the Seven Hills convention.

I ran a fun game of Ironsworn at the Seven Hills convention. Somehow I ended up with a full table of six players, as the Ironsworn headed north to Kraghaal, to save their kin from the horrors that hey had awoken in the deep mine. The game rattled along just fine with a big table of players. Everyone got into the mechanics and the Moves, with several eager to get their downloads after the session! I stayed flexible with foe Progress Tracks, using multiple if there were multiple foes, splitting into as many as made sense for managing the fiction of the action. The PCs often got the tracks filled up, but were unable to End The Fight without a Strong Move. Everyone was happy with this, they knew they had to land that last telling blow. The crucial distinction between Strike and Clash soon became evident, especially as I was dishing out Harm on 'Pay the Price'. PCs wanted the Initiative! Largely for table management (rather than fiction flow) I fell back on 'combat rounds' t...

OK, after the latest update, I've decided to give the system a try. I arranged a virtual version of the components using Photoshop and the Tabletop Simulator game. It has been a really interesting experience, and I like the way the game flows. Also, I've gotten surprisingly lucky with my dice rolls, scoring strong hit after strong hit. But, who knows what will happen next! Here's my first game session so far: Character: Rhys of the Armak clan BONDS: COMMUNITY - To the Armak Clan PEOPLE - To Aisha, leader of the Armak clan - To Garth, master hunter (my mentor) IRON VOWS: BACKGROUND VOW: Find my true heritage (EPIC). I was not born part of these people, but their leader, Aisha, willingly accepted me under her clan’s banner. Thus, I became an Armaki myself. I do not know who were my parents, and all I’ve got left of my early years is a small wooden icon in the shape of a raven, a bird foreign to these drylands. Because of this, six winters ago, I swore in f...

Hi, I just noticed there's a typo in this card. More specifically, in the part that reads "When you Swear an Iron Vow to serve your YOUR leader..." . Hope it helps!

Kreetan's journey, part 3.

Kreetan's journey, part 3. The villagers are suspicious of Kreetan's arrival, but they are able to persuade the guards that they also barely escaped the raiders. The weapons that were obtained after the fight also help, when Kreetan offers them to the village chieftan as payment for staying. (Journey to Brightwell has been completed in the fiction, despite progress track being fairly empty still. Still, Kreetan has reached a milestone by arriving in Brightwell.) Katania, Brightwell's skald, has been badly injured, and currently lies in the healing house. The healer, Selva, is dubious that Katania and the other nine (4/10 + 5/6) surviving villagers will not survive for longer than a few days unless someone gets additional medicine from the other side of the island as soon as possible. Kreetan swears an Iron Vow to retrieve them (2+3 vs 8,7 [miss] (troublesome quest)). Unfortunately, the plants grow in the shallow water near a dangerous shoal (-2 momentum), and Kreetan does...

I'm at it again with fantasyizing everyone's favorite not quite PbtA game about Vows and epic quests.

I'm at it again with fantasyizing everyone's favorite not quite PbtA game about Vows and epic quests. Today I'm taking a swing at possibly the most complicated part of upping the fantasy level of Ironsworn, Magic. The doc includes a custom asset Disciple of the Infernal Arts which includes a new move: Manifest Power . I'd love to hear any thoughts you guys have on it, and if you give it a try in your game I hope you'll let me know how it goes! There are currently two versions of the move, with the difference between them highlighted. I haven't decided which one feels correct, hopefully it will become clear with playtesting. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yDLXzPLHdreVFVorMFfiEvjJwgtoCdt_e9604GGdaBQ/edit?usp=sharing

Part 2

Part 2 Could not wait too long to find out what happened to Kreetan on their journey to becoming a renowned skald, so here is session two. The combat was a little bit odd for me (not used to story-heavy games or PbtA mechanics) but with the help of the example of play, I think I got things mostly right. I need to throw some more fights at poor Kreetan to get used to it all, I think. I should mention that Kreetan's assets are Storyweaver, Herbalist, and Long-Arm. I wanted something as a combat boost that would suit a youngster who is not overly martial, so the latter seems thematically appropriate. Kreetan attempts to compel the raiders to let them come along, since they wish to get to the barrier islands. They do this by promising to make a good story of the raid. (2+3+1 vs 6,4 [weak hit] -1 spirit for fear of worrying about the slaughter that is to come). A few days later, the longships are holding station overnight, not far from the settlement of Brightwell. As is the custom, th...

So more as idle curiosity than anything, I wondered about community supplements to Ironsworn once the game inevitably becomes an indie darling and sells a million copies. FATE has Powered by FATE , ICRPG has For use with ICRPG CORE , D&D did OGL and of course Apocalypse World/Dungeon World has the now famous Powered by the Apocalypse . What would we call such a thing for Ironsworn to indicate that a community project is designed to run on this ruleset? I'm personally partial to Bound by Iron or something similarly evocative. Anyone else gave it any thoughts? This would probably also be a good time to ask Shawn Tomkin what the official license state of Ironsworn is!

Giving the solo game a try, and enjoying it so far after a short session.

Giving the solo game a try, and enjoying it so far after a short session. The adventures of Kreetan, a young, enthusiatic Ironlander from the Barrier Islands. Their uncle was a renowned skald, but went missing about five years ago, after teaching Kreetan the basics of storytelling. Now that they have their majority, Kreetan wants to track down their uncle, and continue their training, as well as seeing the world a bit. As a first step, they will travel to Brightwell, a settlement a few days sail away, in order to talk with their skald, Katania, whom their uncle knew well. Kreetan undertakes a journey to Brightwell. 5+2+1 vs 9, 1 (weak hit). Arrive at a very small settlement: Grimtree. Here a couple of fishing families live. They have been having a torrid season, and could use a hand. Kreetan spends a few days helping with the fishing in exchange for some guidance. Undertakes the next part of their journey: 4+2 vs 10, 10 (miss) After leaving, an unexpectedly large storm blew up, forcin...

I was thinking today and took a pass at some racial Assets for Ironsworn (in a slightly higher fantasy setting). Obviously a Racial Asset must be taken at Character creation and not through the Advance move. I also took a shot at a Path Asset I'm calling "Exile," for the character that has committed a crime too terrible to even warrant death. The main feature of Exile is to provide additional benefits to Make Camp since you would no longer be able to Sojourn. I had a Drizzt-type character in mind when I was thinking of moves for it, which is why I included the exception for allowing Sojourning at towns that you have developed a bond with after being Exiled, the logic being that you've proven your worth to the folk of that place and they're willing to overlook the mark of shame you bear. I'd love to hear what you guys think about it, and maybe workshop them a touch to make them as good as they can possibly be! Dwarf Solid people from under the mountain, dwar...

Here's a preview of the updated table of contents for Ironsworn Chapter 7 -- coming soon in next preview. I was targeting 25 pages and it's currently at 50. So much for my ability to be concise. What else will this release include? - A bunch of new assets (targeting 9) - Up to four new example foes, including the Iron Revenant. What happens when an ironswon vow is so strong that it survives beyond death? Nothing good, that's what. - Edits to existing assets for clarification, balance, and theme - Minor edits and fixes throughout. The final edit passes will be post-preview, and I will be crowd-sourcing error reports. Get your red pens ready! - No more "See page XX"! It'll all be there, for better or worse.

Is there a sensible place to report minor errors in the current revision? I picked up the following:

Is there a sensible place to report minor errors in the current revision? I picked up the following: Something I noticed in the example of play: the Wayfinder asset card shown there does not match the asset on the current card download. There are also a couple of typos: page 131 has 'tics' instead of 'ticks' in one instance: boxes). "For example, you would mark 2 tics for each point of harm inflicted on an extreme foe" I love the look of the book (the photos are unusual and very cool), so looking forward to the final version.

So I got curious about how the probability works for Ironsworn, and wrote a python script to simulate the outcome of some rolls with different modifiers. (I was inspired by the discussion on taking the +1 from Secure an Advantage over the momentum). The big takeaway that I found from the data is that the odds of getting a weak hit are nearly stagnant regardless of modifier (clocking in between 40-45%), what really moves are the odds of Strong hits and Misses. Each +1 to the modifier increases the odds of a Strong hit and decreases the odds of a miss by about 10%. Thus, taking a +1 forward on your next roll is generally going to net you a 10% increased chance of success overall, with a 10% higher chance that it's going to be a Strong hit. That is, of course, if I did this code right. It seems correct in the samples that I checked though, so here's hoping!

Ok, I need some clarifications.

Ok, I need some clarifications. I tried to search around here, but Google+ isn't the best place to collect searchable wisdom... :D Make Camp move ❤ I understand that a single player rolls for the whole party. Let's say he rolls a Strong Hit. Does any character of the party gain 3x choices on the list? Ie. if I have 3 characters, and the "rolling player" obtain a Strong Hit, do I have up to 9x choices (max 3 for character)? ❤ I see that "Recuperate" and "Partake" have different wording compared to "Relax" and "Focus". Do you mean that if a character choose "Recuperate", ALL the characters in the party regain +1 Health? On the contrary, Relax mentions no "you and any companions", so I suppose that if I choose that one, only my character obtain the Spirit gain. ❤ I don't see limitation in that move, like "you can't choose the same result more than 1 time". So, why I should choose Partake, when ...

Well, this isn't a brain blast, however.

Well, this isn't a brain blast, however... I'm writing down my solo AP. Actually, I'm playing on my PC, half screen with Google Drive doc, half screen with PDF book, for easy reference. My "character sheet" is located on the lowest part of the document, so it keeps following me when I write down the story. Now, how to track the ticks? Admittedly, this is the more "difficult" part in my "play style". Here's the solution. I keep those unicode symbols in my sheet, so I can easily copy/paste them when I need them. I can easily track the ticks, and I keep self contained the single "advancement boxes", for a quick count if I need it. Symbols: ੦◔◑◕⏺ Example Vow: ⏺⏺◔ ੦੦੦ ੦੦੦ ੦ SIde note: incidentally, they remind me the AW clocks :D

Just wanted to mention that I have retooled that Excel sheet I was using for playing Ironsworn to use Google Sheets instead since those seem more popular here. I also found Josh McGowan's toolkit so added my adventure log to that and moved the die roller to a fixed row at the top of the History tab so that it is more conveniently placed for cut and pasting the results into the ongoing story. (Please make a copy to use for yourselves as otherwise everyone will be overwriting each other.) PS: the image button was not working on mobile devices, I have added a dropdown to activate the roll in the cell holding the button

How do you manage "mini games" like Chases, or Dramatic Tasks like "run out the temple before the whole place crumble down" or "defuse a bomb before it explodes" (ok, no bombs in Ironsworn, but you got the point...) I feel both these kind of scenes could be played as Ironsworn play combats or journeys (ie. 10 boxes, every success brings you nearer to the success). But I think we miss some kind of "timer" that put pressure on the heroes. How to balance those kind of scenes? Also, how to manage Secure an Advantage kind of moves, in the timing frames?

If you've provided playtest reports for Ironsworn, or contributed feedback, I'd like to make sure you are properly credited in the next iteration of the rulebook. Please reference this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Z20UOKrJm0e1eY68p2fVleZrXNGbN7gd9huUHpxUMxc/edit?usp=sharing If you are on this list, can you provide me with the name you'd like to be credited under? You can do so via this post, or PM me. If you'd prefer to not be credited, you can let me know that as well. If you aren't on this list and should be, please let me know! I am sure I missed some folks. Note: Everyone will be credited under the broad label of "Playtesters and Contributors", because the lines are pretty fuzzy to me at this point. The input and discussions here on G+ have (hopefully!) made Ironsworn a much better game, and will continue to make it better. Thanks to everyone!

Hi Shawn.

Hi Shawn. If I never said before: thanks. I skimmed thru the manual a couple of times, and I like what I see. I feel this RpG can hit a nice spot between the various PbtA games, Cortex+, Fate etc. Absolutely I'd try it, probably as Solo Play, initially, to see if it shines as it seems. I hope I'll have enough time (and passion) to report some (hopefully) feedback. If I can start with something right now, probably I'd organize the book in a different way. Playing Ironsworn chapter is pretty good as initial overview, as summary. Maybe you don't need to show the character's sheet here (pag 6), you can wait the character generation chapter. Then (pag 7) you start with Moves and Action Roll, Momentum etc. (ie. rules!), and I feel this could be explained AFTER the character generation. It could be daunting for someone to be overloaded with info, at least in the initial stage. I'd probably put "build your world" now, and after that the "create your chara...
