Hello over there, first of all i want to thank you for accepting me in this community, i started to play Ironsworn in solo thanks to my friend David Álvarez and i'm playing in a gothic horror setting of victorian theme with my hero called Lucian Archer, a grim, stoic and focused Monster Slayer that looks much like Solomon Kane and Van Helsing (the character from the hugh jackman's Movie).

So after Lucian completed his first mission of killing an evil noblewoman who was a user of black magic (I took her head as proof of the success of my mission) and defeat a pack of werewolves during my journey back to Chancel (A Place similar to London) i got ambushed by agents of an ecclesiastic (and evil) secret organization of Golemancers and necromancers called the Promethans, they captured me because of Lucian's connection with his mentor called Sullyvhan, who was related with them in the past but later he abandoned them. (The prometheans wants to get both Sullyvahn and Lucian dead so they can maintain their anonymity)
When Lucian woke up, he had lost all his weapons and gear and ended in a cell with a diseased old man called Alban a wise and rather intelligent abbot who opposed to the promethans because what they did to his family but the poor old man ended being captured and left there to die.

In a very similar interaction like with Edmond Dantes and the abbot Faria from the count of montecristo, Lucian and Alban became friends and partners with the same objective in mind (get out of prison). Anyway, they basically digged their way, but in place to find an exit they found an ancient catacomb under the prision, Lucian steeled himself to go there alone and unarmed in order to find an exit or an entrance to another section of the prision so he could recover his gear (his gear is in possesion of the prision's warden, an evil necromancer called Morkai, the Decadent). During his exploration in the catacombs Lucian had to avoid many dangers including Mummies and traps while he could arm himself with an old ceremonial greatsword found in a solitary tomb, in the end he could not find an exit but managed to find a team of spelunkers and treasure hunters from an organization called "the seekers", Lucian met their Leader; a selfish, neutral and gruff treasure hunter called Sadia, he begged Sadia her help to find an exit to this place, but because of a miss with the compel move, Sadia denied the petition of Lucian unless he helped her first to find Morkai so she can kill him (because of personal reasons according to the oracle), So only Lucian and Sadia returned to the cell where the Abbot was keeping a low profile on the guards by putting pillows under the bed sheets in order to make them think that Lucian was sleeping, but once they returned, the prison's break just started.

Sadia managed to open the cell door, we kicked the asses of the guards but later we had to face a horde of zombies, we continued through the passages of the prison and managed to find Morkai's study which door was guarded by a Golem...a Corpse Golem, it was a rather formidable looking opponent and Lucian was affected with the wounded and unprepared conditions (the first during the fight with the zombies and the second because he is without his gear), it was rather dangerous to get in another direct confrontation, so in a display of true act of comradery and self-sacrifice, the Abbot Alban decided to go and call the attention of the Golem so Lucian and Sadia could get in and find Lucian's Gear and probably the evil necromancer inside the study, it was a rather dramatic and sad moment because of the dire circumstances, Lucian was against that plan but Alban told him that his time was gone (he is old and diseased) so he would put the responsability on Lucian's Shoulders to expose the prometheans and avenge the injustices and attrocities commited by them (My character is devoted to Saint Othric the Avenger, Patron of Monster Slayers and Vampire Hunters, so it was proper to the narrative). Lucian made an iron vow promissing Alban to erradicate the Prometheans. (Extreme Rank)

After leave the abbot, Lucian and Sadia managed to get inside the study, there Lucian found his lost gear in a chest, but before of that, they heard the door get open and found a robbed man surprised to find them there, they attacked him but not killed him (just put into submission) for later interrogation, they knew from this man that his name was Themon and was an apprentice of Morkai, Lucian tried to intimidate Themon to force him to speak and reveal where Morkai was, i failed horribly. Themon was not scared of Lucian's threats but i asked the oracle for details and revealed that Themon knew the whereabouts of his master and he was willing to cooperate with them in his assassination because he wants to take his place as the warden and master necromancer of the prison (Themon is basically a power-hungry bastard and a schemer). Lucian and Sadia agreed begrudgingly and relunctantly only because they were desperated (However they had in plan to kill him once they finished with Morkai first). Lucian then made the most hardcore heal move ever, i got a strong hit and he basically took gunpowder from his bullets and cauterized his deep wound from the fight with the zombies just like John Rambo. (Now he is not wounded and unprepared anymore.)

Lucian tried to go and see if he could save the Abbot, he was having a moment of regret and went alone (Because Sadia and Themon are a bunch of fuckers.) and i got a very bad roll and i ended being ambushed by specters, he could barely escape (losing spirit in the process) and returned with Themon and Sadia. Once Lucian resigned himself to accept that the Abbot was lost forever he continued with the group through the prison, however, they had a terrible setback, Lucian and Sadia ended falling in a trapdoor and got separated from Themon in the process, they fell into the Prison's Sewers only to be attacked by drowners (Godammn Challenge dices!), they could fight and hold their ground shooting and hacking those aquatic bastards but it was costly (I lost health and supply), they could not defeat the drowners because they were too many, forcing them to to find a way to escape by pushing a rusty reinforced iron door that was blocking their way, Lucian managed to kick the door, then block it in order not let the drowners advance further. Now they had to continue their way with haste because they did not had much time, because the drowners were trying to batter the door, i rolled for gather information in order to find an exit to the sewers and scored a weak hit, i found a ladder that goes up, however there was an inminent danger (I got "Move" and "Strength" in the action and theme oracle) so i thought that they were walking in a huge aqueduct and behind them it was coming a roaring tidal wave of mud and wastewater, i had to roll face danger with edge to try to escape from that wave of sludge and get out of there safe. I got a weak hit so i did it, but i lost momentum. By the moment this is all what i managed to advance in my solo adventure but not without the help of my friend David.

By the moment i have some questions:
According to how much i advanced in my story written above.

How much progress i should mark in my character sheet or how i should record all this progress before have my final fight with Morkai?

I thought that escape from prision would be a troublesome quest but it has been far more than troublesome with all the shitstorm that Lucian has to face until now. Also i want to finish this chapter of trying to escape from prison soon so i can play Co-Op with David, but i need to find and kill Morkai first in order to get the job done. Which makes me think that maybe by killing Morkai i can make progress in my new Vow to erradicate the Prometheans.

My second question is more about asking advice of how to get ideas of dungeon places (like the prison) without have to think too much, i have the problem that when i try to figure out about details of new rooms using the action and theme oracle i get more confused with the answer and sometimes, i can't think of a place without ask for help.

And my final question is how you determine the results when you lose in the "battle" and "end the fight" move?

I know you had to check the oracle and pay the price but, does that mean that is already game over or you can retreat from combat in order to not get captured or killed?

I know this post is rather long specially writting my solo adventure, but i needed to put context because i'm having problems to how to finish this part and in what regards to solo roleplay, i have always doubts that if i'm doing something right or i'm doing it wrong. (Maybe i'm too perfectionist about that.)

Thank you in advance. :)

  1. That was a really fun read! So I'd say you're doing several somethings right. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and i'm thankful that you think i'm doing fine my solo roleplay.

  3. Alex Munizaga Gonzalez, that was a fun a read. I enjoyed Lucian's (mis)adventures. I'll try to give some feedback to your questions. Marking progress is subjective, but basically when you successfully make a move or resolve a conflict that moves the move forward. Given the context of the prison, if there was a role to befriend the mentor, a Forge a Bond perhaps, that could have been progress. Getting out of the cell, certainly as well. Certainly, a lot has happened and backtracking the progress at this point might not be possible. Also, it might not be worth the work. Your mileage may vary. Ergo, I have two suggestions:

    1) If you can, go back and find the rolls that should be progress, count them up and figure out how many there are and determine what level the vow ought to be. Sounds way more than Troublesome at this point. As an example, if there are 8 rolls and/or encounters that move the story/vow forward, it's probably Formidable. Two more to wrap it up, find Morkai and then kill him would be the next two probably.

    2) Ask yourself how difficult this has been and how near the end you are. Whatever that answer is, go with it. The goal of the game is to have fun, if you are taking a turn that is not going to be fun, turn back.

On to your second question about ideas and details for rooms. I'm not sure I have much of a suggestion for you. I've not done lots of site exploration (dungeon crawl) in my solo-play yet. For the on that I have done, I adapted the playtest of Delve that Shawn Tomkin posted a couple of weeks ago. Other than that, I'd say look for inspiration. A quick web search, think of a game or movie. Bethesda games come to mind, be they dungeons or castles in Skyrim or Vaults and towns in Fallout. Sorry, this answer isn't more helpful.

As for paying the price, and this actually goes true for any Action/Theme oracle roll, remember that the first suggestion for Pay the Price is "Make the most obvious outcome happen." If there is an obvious outcome, there is no need to go any further. If I fail a face danger check while climbing, I am probably falling. No real need to look deeper than that. Further, if the Action/Theme or any other oracles is confusing or doesn't fit. Feel free to nudge them up or down. I believe the rule book even suggests doing so. My $0.02 is to treat the tables as a source of inspiration, not as dictums written in stone.

Specifically, if I understand correctly, you are asking about failing the End the Fight roll. That should not be death for your character, though it might cause damage and that could do it. The fiction should inform the situation. So as an example, you're fighting zombies. You've been doing well, you get a strong hit, you make the End the Fight move and the dice decide they hate you and your character. I'd probably have the character kill what he thinks is the last zombie only to see a massive horde round the corner. It's not a fight he can win anymore and so its time to run.

The second example, you're fighting an expert fencer. The battle is tough, but you've gotten the better of him. You go to end the fight and the dice have a nasty surprise waiting for you. You clash swords and he smiles at you. "I admit it: you are better than I am."

"Then why are you smiling?" You ask, confused.

"Because I know something you don't. I am not left-handed!" He switches his blade to his right hand and drives you back!

  4. Admittedly, the fencing example is probably better for a weak hit that suddenly gets harder. Other possibilities include capture, knocked out, left for dead, and so forth. In one of the Conan stories, he loses a fight and is then crucified and left to die out in the desert. Failing an End the Fight roll probably doesn't mean your character's death, it does mean they are probably going to learn more about suffering though. Something horrible should probably be the outcome.

I think I answered all your question, or at least I tried to. Cheers and good luck!

I did it!! I finally killed Morkai and Finally escaped from Prision!!

Oh God so much happpened! First of All, i used the delve playtest Report as guide line for this part, the moves were extra helpful, specially find your objective and check your gear.

    Well, this happened:

After escape from the sewers, Lucian and Sadia managed to follow a path that led them into a Mausoleum and then to a Cementery that was outside of the Prison, so basically they were near to find the way to escape, i could at least find Morkai who was there doing necromacer stuff, Lucian prepared an ambush with Sadia, first i used "check your gear" to look for something useful to fight Morkai and i thought in pull out my Specter oil, so Lucian could coat his sword and dagger in case that Morkai would summon evil spirits and he can cut them despite being incorporeal. Then both attacked him while he was unaware shooting bullets and crossbow bolts. (combining "enter the fray" with shadow and "secure and advantage" with Wits and the archery asset, although with Lucian i renamed it as "Marksman" to imply that he uses this asset with his revolvers)

Lucian Charged with his blades ready to slice and dice Morkai but i got a miss, from there things started to go bad, Morkai managed to attack them using a fear inducement spell to damage the spirit of Both Lucian and Sadia, the fight continued into a constant exchange of spells and gunfire between Lucian and Morkai, however things were getting worse, i got a miss again and Morkai brought Specters to aid him, Sadia Panicked and fled leaving Lucian Alone, My Monster Slayer stood his ground but he ended with the shaken condition, then i used my move of "turn the tide" and used "face Danger" with Heart and i got a Strong Hit, Lucian Managed to shake off his fears and charged valiantly while dodging the specters thinking in Alban and his vow of vengeance, he managed to get in melee at this point with Morkai and Lucian began to deal many cuts on the necromancer, but in a dire moment i got a weak hit in a strike Check just when i got 9 in progress.

Then Morkai, used a spell of inflict wounds and opened a deep wound on Lucian, leaving him wounded (Again!) while was being tormented and harassed by the specters, everything was getting against Lucian (Health 0, Spirit 0. momentum -2, Wounded and Shaken conditions, it was a complete nightmare! D:) But then, in a twist of events, i managed to get a Strong Hit in a Clash move and i recovered the initiative with 10 in progress.

I could finally use the "End the fight" move. Lucian got his chance of sweet revenge by "Unleashing the Wolf" (A methaforical term that i use narratively to refer when Lucian controls his emotions and saves all his anger and hatred to be released when the moment is right, like releasing a chained rabid wolf.), he went all out in a frenzied waltz of slashes on Morkai, killing him mercilessly, once his hatred enemy fell, Lucian could finally find the exit from the Graveyard not without looking for last time the evil prison where he was confined at the distance and thinking in the sacrifice of his friend the Abbot Alban.

I marked two ticks in the progress of my vow "erradicate the Prometheans" by killing Morkai.

Now Lucian needs a well deserved rest and find his mentor Sullyvhan because he needs answers from him about the Prometheans and also training.
