Part 2
Part 2
Could not wait too long to find out what happened to Kreetan on their journey to becoming a renowned skald, so here is session two. The combat was a little bit odd for me (not used to story-heavy games or PbtA mechanics) but with the help of the example of play, I think I got things mostly right. I need to throw some more fights at poor Kreetan to get used to it all, I think.
I should mention that Kreetan's assets are Storyweaver, Herbalist, and Long-Arm. I wanted something as a combat boost that would suit a youngster who is not overly martial, so the latter seems thematically appropriate.
Kreetan attempts to compel the raiders to let them come along, since they wish to get to the barrier islands. They do this by promising to make a good story of the raid. (2+3+1 vs 6,4 [weak hit] -1 spirit for fear of worrying about the slaughter that is to come).
A few days later, the longships are holding station overnight, not far from the settlement of Brightwell. As is the custom, they have pulled the ships onto a beach on the other side of the island within an hour or two of rowing. The usual plan would be to strike the village just after dawn. Kreetan decides that they can not simply let the Brightwellers be raided, so they will face the danger of attempting to sneak away and warn them. (5+1 vs 8,2 [weak hit])
So as far as Kreetan can tell, they are away clean, with a night's march ahead of them, based on overheard comments fromthe raiders. A couple of raiders have followed, however, so Kreetan is forced to enter the fray as they attempt an ambush. (1+2 vs 3,5 [miss])
The pair of raiders (two Troublesome foes) jump Kreetan, who suffers 2 harm. Kreetan clashes with the first (6+2 vs 5,9 [weak hit]) but takes a minor slash from the raider's spear as they do (-harm).
Kreetan works their way around the raiders, trying to get them to tangle each other up and secure an advantage. (2+2 vs 10,3 [weak hit]), unfortunately, the raiders are savvy fighters, and this does not slow them for long. The raider who has been closely engaged comes in to attack again, forcing Kreetan to clash in return (6+2 vs 1,2 [strong hit]). Kreetan was expecting the attack and is able to sidestep, leaving the raider wide open for a potential finishing strike (9 vs 9,3 [weak hit]). Kreetan's staff takes the raider cleanly on the side of the head, leaving one opponent unconscious on the grass. Unfortunately, the other raider is able to press the advantage and leaves a nasty scratch on Kreetan's upper arm (-harm).
Kreetan goes on the offensive with a series of strikes intended to leave their opponent out of options (4+2 vs 9,4 [weak hit]).
The raider is able to weather the storm of blows, and counterattacks. Kreetan falls back and attempts to secure an advantage by threatening the downed raider (4+2 vs 6,7 [miss]). The second raider calls the bluff and attacks regardless. Kreetan, unable to actually kill an unthreatening target, and under pressure, rolls the unconscious body at the oncoming raider, tripping them up for a vital moment, before Kreetan staff clashes against the raider's steel (6+2 vs 2,3 [strong hit]). The sudden attack puts the raider on the back foot, allowing an opportunity to end the fight (10 vs 8,3 [strong hit]). The raider, stepping backwards, trips over a stone, and Kreetan is able to apply staff to noggin, knocking them out cold.
Kreetan loosely ties the unconscious bodies up, and covers them in their cloaks, after liberating them of their valuable weapons. After waiting a few minutes to rest and see that no one else is following, Kreetan continues the march to Brightwell. They also take the opportunity to bind their wounds (heal 4+2 vs 4,10 [weak hit] -Supply).
Will Kreetan arrive in time to raise the alarm? (50/50: 41: No).
Unfortunately, the fight has taken its toll, and, almost dead on their feet, Kreetan stumbles into Brightwell a few hours after dawn, to find the aftermath of the raid: the small village has numerous buildings burned, and much of the stored fish and other supplies have been taken. Of the nearly 100 inhabitants, 17 have been killed or grievously wounded. Is Katania one of them? (Unlikely: 76 [Yes]).
Yeah. That last roll was a bit unfortunate, but I like having the dice decide some of the story for me. Katania is still alive, I promise. Keeping them so might be somewhat less straightforward....
