Kreetan's journey, part 3.

Kreetan's journey, part 3.

The villagers are suspicious of Kreetan's arrival, but they are able to persuade the guards that they also barely escaped the raiders. The weapons that were obtained after the fight also help, when Kreetan offers them to the village chieftan as payment for staying.
(Journey to Brightwell has been completed in the fiction, despite progress track being fairly empty still. Still, Kreetan has reached a milestone by arriving in Brightwell.)
Katania, Brightwell's skald, has been badly injured, and currently lies in the healing house.

The healer, Selva, is dubious that Katania and the other nine (4/10 + 5/6) surviving villagers will not survive for longer than a few days unless someone gets additional medicine from the other side of the island as soon as possible. Kreetan swears an Iron Vow to retrieve them (2+3 vs 8,7 [miss] (troublesome quest)).
Unfortunately, the plants grow in the shallow water near a dangerous shoal (-2 momentum), and Kreetan does not know these waters. In addition, the villagers are not entirely willing to leave the village, for fear that the raiders will return.

Wena, Selva's son, would know the area well enough, but is unwilling to leave, in case the raiders return. Kreetan spins a dire tale of what would happen if Katania (and the other injured) do not get the required herbs in order to compel Wena. (6+3+1 vs 7,4 [strong hit]) Wena agrees to accompany Kreetan to the opposite coast, in a small boat.

They approach the chieftan, asking for supplies for the trip (sojourn) (6+3 vs 2,9 [weak hit] +2 supply). With their supplies topped up, Kreetan and Wena set sail for the shoal. (Not undertaking a journey, since this is short-ranged, and Wena knows the area well.)

On arriving, Kreetan prepares to face danger by swimming down to the seabed and picking the seaweed needed. Wena can confirm if it is the correct stuff. (3+2 vs 5,9 [miss] but burns momentum, so converts to [weak hit]). The water is bitingly cold, and still rough from the recent storm, knocking Kreetan about into the rocks (take -1 harm). Still, Kreetan has succeeded in obtaining the required herbs, fulfilling a milestone.

While Wena sails back to Brightwell, Kreetan attempts to get warm and dry. They also begin the preparation of the seaweed, at least as much as can be done in a small boat. This will secure an advantage for Selva (1+2 vs 9,2 [weak hit]). Unfortunately, the sea conditions make this less effective than it could be.

On arriving back in Brightwell, the situation is much the same as a day or two earlier, when Kreetan and Wena left. Selva has managed to keep the injured alive, and rushes off to apply the seaweed remedy, which will cleanse the wounds. Kreetan hopes that this will be enough to fulfill their vow to get the herbs (6 vs 4,9 [weak hit]). While it is enough to aid most of the injured, it does not seem to be enough to completely cure Katania, who will need a longer recovery period than Selva thought. Still, Katania is out of immediate danger. (Is there another remedy that could be tried? 50/50: 53: yes) (What? Theme: 37: Hunt. There is an animal that can be used, similar to the seaweed, but more potent, and more dangerous.)

In the meantime, some villagers have gone to collect the raiders that Kreetan left tied up. (Are they still there? unlikely: 84: yes). They are now contained in a stone hut in the village, but have refused to speak. Apparently they want to speak to Kreetan though.

Not quite sure where this will go, but I want to try drawing the circle, so probably Kreetan gets challenged here, in exchange for additional help. Still, for the most part it has been difficult to work my way into an unwinnable state, although not completing that vow was a bummer.

  1. Open to suggestions for what happens next, by the way. Clearly Kreetan will need to go get the medicine to finish that vow. Not quite sure what the raiders might want though.

  3. Thanks Evandro Novel. It is pretty easy to write the fiction, because Shawn has written such a good system to work with. Looking forward to trying this as a co-op game too. :)
